Utility Lets Microsoft Windows Vista Users Forego Registration Indefinitely | |

Among the enhancements offered by Microsoft's new Windows Vista operating system is a feature that lets corporate IT departments and OEMs indefinitely forestall the requirement that users officially register their copy of the operating system within 30 days of system activation. When Windows Vista is booted for the first time on a PC, users must ordinarily register it with Microsoft by inputting a valid registration number that's transmitted to the company over the Internet. If that's not done within 30 days, the operating system is designed to enter what's known as reduced functionality mode. However, companies that want to boot Windows Vista on their PCs without registering the OS within that time period can use a built-in utility called SkipRearm to create a new 30 day activation window whenever they like, according to technical documents on Microsoft's Web site. | ||

So what? It was intended as a documented procedure to help enterprise customers work with new policies that they may not understand well.
It doesn't change the fact that stealing is wrong and doing so, like doing anything wrong, is going to make those that do it feel like crap inside. If they don't and feel good about it, then there is something even greater wrong with them - I am convinced that all people are born with the ability to feel what is right and know what is right from wrong - why else do they seek to hide such things and lie about them. Think about it - which costs more, the price of a piece of software, or the loss of one's self-respect? There are some things that no amount of money can buy and stealing something isn't going to replace that. |

| #2: I doubt very much that the Chinese or Russian that needs to work for 4 months just to afford a copy of Vista will lose any sleep over pirating it. |

#3, One of the times I went to war was to a country that most young men from that same country were leaving by the tens of thousands. Many years later, a man about my age from that country, who had fled to Canada as the war heated up, was openly critical of America and its foreign policy - that has always bugged the piss out of me. It was fine to let others take up for his country when it served his interests and perfectly fine to run away from problems at home; however, it wasn't okay when it was another group of people that were being protected from tyrants and murderers.
Point is... each generation [in any country] has the responsibility to stand up and make things better for themselves. If a nation is at a point in its history where democracy and public utilities trump personal PC's and HDTV's then that needs to be "their" focus. I can say that, because I and many people like me, did go and help them - and while we were at it, we put our own lives and desires on hold and on the line. That is perfectly fine - so long as some smug assed arm-chair geo-politician doesn't sit on his ass and keep score while our young kids bust ass and get wounded and killed in the process - equally valid for every hard working person that underwrites all the damn aid we send down range, too. Latch, your argument is as empty as the soul of any man that does not sacrifice to make his own keep better and as empty as any puke that steals anything, from anyone. I get so tired of people living without heart. How do they do that? It's like being dead already. I get tired of people making excuses for things they know are simply wrong - and just as mad at people who do have a lot that don't give of themselves and their time. Microsoft clearly has done more than any company to help all people - no matter where they are in this world. #4, Self-Respect is the one gift any man may give to himself and the one thing no other man may take away. It is based upon being measured by what one does and therefore is. I think that any person that finds a taste of it, will recognize how powerful it is - how addicting it is. |
