The Dell XPS 410 with ATI TV Wonder Digital Cable Tuner is the culmination of the things we've been promised for years: the ability to use Media Center Edition (MCE) with digital cable TV. With this latest iteration of the XPS 410, users can now time-shift (and even place-shift, to an extent) TV programming that they've been aching to view on their PCs. The XPS 410's copious storage capacities alone are reason enough to be excited for this technology (think about the last time you "lost" episodes on your DVR or TiVo during a vacation because they were edged out by newer recordings). Though TV on Vista's MCE interface is still a niche product, this system makes great strides toward making Dell and Microsoft's vision of the "digital home media suite" a reality. | ||

Finally! This is off to some kind of real start.
We're evaluating the effort it is going to take to get our own WMC centric systems certified for the same - but worry most about STB's from Direct and Dish that are rumored to ship with their own versions of Vista/WMC baked into them. Worried, because we've worked so hard and for a long time, to deliver the best possible home media systems and experience - which may be negated if the carriers start shipping their own Vista based STB's and we're locked out of accessing cable and sat cards - which at some point - perhaps a year, we'll be able to access. I hope all involved do not cut us smaller guys out, because as a specialty builder we can offer a lot of high-end customizations and really good user support that others cannot, or won't. |

| I've been waiting for this. However, I read elsewhere that a bluray drive was part of the package? If true, I'll wait a bit longer. |

| #2, Yeah - I am for sure in the HD DVD camp on that one - for two reasons, the very strong SDK/Dev support for the interface and 2, the media itself, where in HD DVD the product is sandwhiched properly - between two layers - vice Blu-Ray, which is not and more like an open faced sandwich. It is probable that many people will not recall that when Blu-Ray was first introduced, it was intended to be housed in a cartridge to protect it. Given the vulnerability of the layer, increased costs associated with its production and an inferior [read, larger] compression used in most cases, make it inferior to HD DVD [IMO]. |
