Adobe to take Photoshop online | |

Hoping to get a jump on Google and other competitors, Adobe Systems plans to release a hosted version of its popular Photoshop image-editing application within six months, the company's chief executive said Tuesday. The online service is part of a larger move to introduce ad-supported online services to complement its existing products and broaden the company reach into the consumer market, Adobe CEO Bruce Chizen told CNET News.com. Chizen said Adobe laid the foundation for a hosted Photoshop product with Adobe Remix, a Web-based video-editing tool it offers through the PhotoBucket media-sharing site. Like Adobe Remix, the hosted Photoshop service is set to be free and marketed as an entry-level version of Adobe's more sophisticated image-editing tools, including Photoshop and Photoshop Elements. Chizen envisions revenue from the Photoshop service coming from online advertising. | ||

| It will be interesting to see how many of the current spate of "web 2.0" services will still exist in a year or two. How many of the ones that survive will still be free? MS and Google have enough money between them to buy most of the countrys on Earth, so their offerings will be around. I don't think Word Perfect's offering will last long. Anything Word Perfect does that is great is quickly stolen copied by Microsoft. Adobe's offering, we'll see how useful it will be over the web when it comes out. Using this stuff for free will at least be fun. |

WordPerfect botched many, many things. Notably when Windows started to supplant DOS and Word overtook Wordperfect because Word on Windows was much, much better than WordPerfect on Windows. |

| #5--according to someone that worked for WordPerfect (at the time owned by Novell, I think), the problem (greatly simplified) was that they were betting on OS/2. When OS/2 fizzled, they were left with a "24-bit product" (as a colleague described it--something that didn't quite make the leap from 16- to 32-bit) for Windows. |
