Google Targets Microsoft With Launch Of Business Applications
Time: 03:28 EST/08:28 GMT | News Source: InformationWeek | Posted By: Kenneth van Surksum

Having won over millions of consumers with its online search and productivity tools, Google is now looking to displace Microsoft as the desktop application provider of choice in corporate America by offering a range of low-cost, zero maintenance software that office workers can access through the Internet.

Google Apps Premier Edition, unveiled Thursday, features online e-mail, calendaring, messaging and talk applications as well as a word processor and a spreadsheet. The launch follows Google's introduction of a similar suite aimed at consumers last August. The new Premier Edition, however, offers enhancements aimed squarely at corporate environments.

"Businesses are looking for applications that are simple and intuitive for employees, but also offer security, reliability and manageability," says Dave Girouard, VP and general manager for Google Enterprise.

This exactly what every business wants - to expose their confidential documents outside of their safe and secure network.

Seriously, this is great for Joe Home User or the Mom & Pop business who maybe can't afford an expensive office suite, but for anyone to think that companies are going to expose their valuable data beyond their firewalls is just kidding themselves.

Ditto your comments, rxcall.

Once again, we have absolutly no comparison between a single Microsoft app included in the Office 2007 suite and I am sure this is a joke, the "Apps Premier Edition." This is the same carefully staged, hey what do you call it, advertisment on the part of tech media that was given to Sun's offering.

Meanwhile, the author, typically, has no idea what a corporation like GE pays via Micorosft's Software Assurance plan for productivity apps, training, and support. And, of course, let's not ask anybody. Ssssshhhhhh! It's a secret.

Well, back to my Excel pivot table . . . Oh, "Apps Premier Edition" doesn't offer that? Who knew? Oops, I got an e-mail coming in via OWA. What, "Apps Premier Edition" doesn't offer that? You get the idea.

Google has great search. Better stick to something it knows something about.

On Google the price is listed as $50 a year per user. I could probably go to a computer show and get a copy of Office XP for $50. Also, how many third party apps are tightly integrated with office? My company's BI solution integrates directly with Excel. I don't think it will be supporting GOFFICE any time soon! And what about the other apps like Onenote, Infopath, and particularly Access. These are all very productive applications that are integral to many Corporations. Then factor in the other MS applications such as Visio, Project, and Sharepoint/Groove that integrate with Office. Now that is a Premiere Software Suite.

If I didn’t have an MSDN subscription I would probably buy an old copy of MS office, Corel Office or Lotus Smart Suite before I shell out fifty bucks a year for GOFFICE.

#1, I fully agree. I was also going to suggest using an old version of Office. (I still have Office 97 running on one of my computers at home.)

I agree too. Besides, with Google you just never know where an advertisement will show up.

I can see it now...

"This is a summary of our corporate IT overhead report for FY06. In this report you will find

Bigger Penis, guaranteed! www.mybigwang.com

that our expendetures were down by 12%, a shortfall of 13%..."

And for those of us burdened with Lotus Notes, the MS Desktop Search plugin for Notes rocks!

#5 I tried that URL - it's not working. Can you give me the right one?

I'm sure this author's next article on a MS product will begin "Having won over millions of consumers with its software solutions..." lol

I just pulled that out of the air, of course, but I'm actually suprised it's a dead link LOL

It was a joke TechLarry - but thanks anyways...

"Danny Allan, director of security research at Watchfire, a security and analysis company, says researchers found a vulnerability in Google Desktop that puts users' private information at risk and enables remote attackers to run programs on the infected machines."

"Google Desktop has the ability to cache and remember all of a user's private and corporate information. It basically is a mini agent that lives on the desktop computer and crawls through e-mail, zip files, office documents, and Web sites visited. It indexes all of the information and stores it within its cache.

This vulnerability allows a remote attacker to access this cache and all the information in it, explains Allan.

The malware is introduced to the computer if the user clicks on a link in an e-mail or visits a malicious Web site. The malware connects to that link, according to Allan, and injects the malicious script onto the computer.

Once a computer is infected, the attacker can search for information on the computer and download it to his own system, control how the Web application functions, and run programs remotely on the computer. Allan notes that the first two uses are serious but calls the remote control a critical issue."

"While Google is automatically delivering a patch, Google Desktop users may want to make sure they are running version 5.0.701.30540 or later. In addition to its bug fix, Google has added, "another layer of security checks to the latest version of Google Desktop to protect users from similar vulnerabilities in the future. We have received no reports that this vulnerability was exploited," said Google Spokesman Barry Schnitt."

It wasn't the bug that freaked me out. It was "Google Desktop has the ability to cache and remember all of a user's private and corporate information."

No thanks.

#16 By 37047 (216.191.227.68) at 2/26/2007 9:04:43 AM
#15: I see. You weren't clear on that point in your previous message. Yeah, I can see how that would be a concern. I am less concerned about the caching of the info than I am that it was vulnerable, and I am glad they got it fixed. I don't personally use it, but I am glad the fix is available for those who do.
