Citigroup to Use Microsoft .NET Technology | |

Citigroup Inc. C.N , the world's largest banking group, said on Wednesday it will use Microsoft Corp.'s MSFT.O Web services for its sites in a pact that includes promoting its credit cards through Microsoft's MSN Internet media network. Microsoft's .NET technology, which ties different corporate networks together and allows sharing data and other services, will be used to make Citigroup customer transactions easier. Citi Cards, the largest U.S. provider of credit cards, will be the first unit to use Microsoft services. Microsoft said Citi Cards will be promoted on its MSN network and featured prominently in the networks e-commerce services. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. | ||

#3 If you base your usage of certain companies off of what software they use then you really need some help.
For example I'm sure as hell not going to stop using Bank of America because they use Java. Its not the software they use but how they use it to provide services that you need in a timely manner. Hell if someone wanted to they could most likely provide any service in almost any programming language on any plateform... it just matters how much time it takes the company to develop those services and how much of that cost is passed on to you as a consumer. So if they can use .Net to build services I need faster and for less money... i'm all about it. |

I refuse to use any bank because they do all their stuff on mainframes with COBOL!

#3 As soon as you learn a little about the moral high ground you are claiming, feel free to come back here. It might be interesting for you to know that there are already a healthy number of companies using .NET technologies http://asp.net/Default.aspx?tabindex=4&tabid=41. #8,9 You have real concerns about security I think. It might be wise before you jump on the bandwagon and sound foolish (like #3), to closely investigate how any company processes your data. I suspect that you'll find you know very little of what, where, and how your data is stored and processed. A blanket rejection of .NET is rather uncalled for. I have written several .NET applications which do not use .NET My Services. The concerns you have with Passport and passport related services do not in any way apply to my use of .NET technology. |

I have major security and privacy concerns with Linux and will not use it until those concerns addressed by GNU. They can't just create something like Linux and expect people to just dive in, especially considering that most people are still very sceptical about performing transactions online and in general they do not wish to have companies tracking their activity. RMS must adress the security/privacy aspect in detail to ease fears or this stuff will never fly.

God,
I wish that MS hadn't Lumped summed .net into one Marketing scheme. Then you get the public Misconception. Now lets try to break down the differences. First you have the underlying Technology, Roled into a New IDE called VS.net. This is a Managed Code Project. somewhat sim. to the JVM, It is a programming enviroment. it doesn't collect personal data, it is based on security roles that are common in Internet Explorer. (which I hope they expand) It is a Feature rich API. that can and has support for up to 20+ languages. (so that old Cobol code could in effect be moderninzed in a .net platform while still being programmed in cobol.) Now there is the platforms. XP is the firxt OS but it was released before the final release of vs.net so it doesn't have native support for the CLR. the .net services will have the CLR built in. and natively support applicatiosn programmed in the CLR. But that only provides the platform for it to run. Next comes the Services. Passport. My whatever it is. Passport is the Big concern, as it central repository of names. with extreamly important information. But hey you don' tneed to even use passport. if you don't want to. (although a few services on MSN require a passport. but you can effectively put in fake information if you wish. But Lets Remember who has the most information on you. and Unless you Opt out. 95% of your banks sell thier costomer's lists to outside parties. And lets remember that a Certain number that is very important in all of this in america, namely the SSN is a Public Domain number (betcha didn't know that did you) And that sort of informantion is sold all the time. So if you are concened about privacy, I hope you have opted out of your Bank Selling your infromation and other offline sercuity concerns before complaining about Passport or any online version. But beyond that AOL. Sun and about 20 other companies and banks are working on Liberty alliance. and plan on offering the same thing. Also AOL has A MUCH worse History of Security Issues than any ISP that I know of. But I guess with 34 million Users people trust them enough to handle the information online. now the other services don't nec have any information that is transmitted on an open line. My Calendar, My Contact List etc are all features that can be offered. BTW Unless a Smart Client is used. the End user never has to see the CLR on the client side. But eventually the Use of Smart Clients will rise and the CLR will be nec on the client side. But on that end. Almost all users now have JVM on thier machine. co haveing the CLR will be a minor issue. It will be like having the visual basic library on your system to run vb programs or the Msvc library to run visual c programs or the foxpro runtime to run foxpro programs. As a matter of fact I imagine in the next year you will buy a program the loads the CLR in course to run and it won't even be noticed. El |
