The judge in the Microsoft antitrust case refused Tuesday to allow testimony from one of the company's fiercest critics in support of penalties that nine states are seeking against the software company. After asking former Netscape chief executive James Barksdale to leave the courtroom, U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly said Barksdale could not speak authoritatively about whether penalties sought by the states would work better than those agreed to by the federal government. | ||

This is proof that James Barksdale is to blame for Netscape's demise.
I'm also unclear on this contention by Sun that not including the MS-JVM in Windows XP somehow makes Windows XP incompatible with Java. By this logic, Windows XP is also incompatible with Photoshop because it doesn't ship by default. |

Are you aware #9 that Windows Explorer and Internet Explorer are the same program - especially if the HTML rendering engine is not counted as part of Internet Explorer?
Why does removing IE matter so much? |

Ok, define what Constitutes an OS?? and what type of an OS?? 20 years ago the IDEA of an a computer on the desktop was laughed at. 10 years ago. even the concept of Full featured Multimedia computer wasn't even a concept. So now in 2002 what is the definition of an OS?? What middle ware is at the OS level now at the multimedia level. Should not the OS Support all formats natively in the OS layer. Also the internet is fairly new in the realm of things. What layer of support should it be given in the OS layer?? Netscape lost the browser wars not because the Browser was in Windows. (maybe perhaps it was free they did loose out on a revenue stream, But other browsers were free before both Netscape and IE were) They lost out because they stagnated in their developement. 4.x was A very poor release. We at work were given a choice between Netscape and IE as a browser. by 89% IE won. Why because it is a better browser. But back to the point of this article. While I do have some bitter points at MS over the Years. And I can understand some companies having those bitterness to, but that is compitition. Other businesses look at how Successful MS has been and envy it. When technolgy catches up with them. They blame outside forces and grasp at straws to instead of looking at why they failed. Remember we are talking about people that are Multimillionaires here. the higher ups at Netscape for example are NOT hurting for money They had to do something right in that aspect. But they didn't do it right in the platform. Sun is another example. They set UP Java in the format to catch MS in the extend format in the way that the standard was written. But it has backfired on SUN in several ways. Namely the Sparc is ageing, JAVA while used in the enterprise level in several different areas has its short comings. (IBM has propiertery extentions to JAVA to over come some of those, but SUN doesn't sue IBM on that issue) YET Sun wants to blame Microsoft for its own ineptness, non customer related practices of the past several years. Of all the people Sueing BE has the largest claim. but it primarily lost out when APPLE kicked them off of thier platform. El. |

MS wasn't the only one lacking RMI support.
------------------------------------ "Despite supporting the majority of the Java 1.1 specification, the most popular web browsers -- Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer -- do not adequately support RMI. Navigator supports RMI on most platforms but does not support HTTP tunneling, so Netscape users connected to the web through a proxy server can't use an RMI applet. Meanwhile, Netscape for the Macintosh does not support RMI at all. Internet Explorer 4.0-5.0 also lacks RMI support, although a patch is supposedly available to add the missing classes (the RMI classes are available from Microsoft's web site, but instructions for installing them is not provided)."
