If you care about running Windows on a Mac, you’ve undoubtedly heard that the end user license agreement (EULA) for Windows Vista Home Basic and Home Premium forbids you to use these versions of Microsoft’s latest operating system release with virtualization software—software that allows you to run operating systems other than the Mac OS in a windowed environment within the Mac OS. Such virtualization software includes the popular Parallels Desktop for Mac. What the reports on this matter don’t reveal is whether this is simply a legal restriction or also a technical one. Perhaps I'm reading my own point of view into MS's license intentions. Here it is. One is not to run a virtual machine using the same product key of the root OS. You are supposed to buy one license for the box and another one for each of the virtual machines. The same would hold true if you gladly give MS money for a Vista license to run on a Mac, either using Boot Camp or Parallels. One of the things that keeps me from buying a Mac is the almost (ok...with some people it is) fanatical view Mac users take of anyone running a Windows-based PC. Sure, there are many features that a Mac has to someone like me who's main hobby (and part time income) is photography.
I also work in the business (finance/insurance) world where every company (at least to my knowledge) uses a Windows based system and runs some version of Office. I just don't get the almost hatred that some Mac users have towards Windows and Microsoft. It's almost as bad as the debate with some amateur (maybe sophmoric is a better term) photographers as to whether Canon or Nikon is better. Didn't Microsoft make a big investment in Apple about ten years ago? Doesn't Microsoft still make Office for Mac? |

| #1, That's my understanding as well, unless you are using Ultimate, which allows you to run the same licensed copy in a VM. |

First, you don't have to base your own usage on others. Be yourself. Second, the 'investment' in Apple by Microsoft was TEN years ago and has long since been cashed in (and they made a substantial gain). It was only $150 million. It was more of a publicity stunt to show Microsoft's continued support of the Mac Platform. At the time apple had some 6 billion in the bank, and no long-term debt. TL |
