Standards battles tend to be all about politics and politicking, as the increasingly heated Open Document Format (ODF) vs. Open Office XML (OOXL) file-format contest proves. Blogs (and lawsuits) have become the new battleground. In this corner, we have Bob Sutor, Vice President of Standards and Open Source for IBM. He's joined by Massachusetts attorney Andy Updegrove, who is with technology law firm Gesmer Updegrove LLP. Speaking of Mary Jo, she had another interesting post about MS. As suspected, MS seems to not like paid-for studies that don't come to the conclusions MS would like, so MS tries to lean on the group doing the study to change the numbers. Just as I suspected all along. I guess from now on, Microsoft zealots won't be able to point to these purchased, flawed, rigged "studies" any more on MS' "Get the FUD" site.

Microsoft tried but didn't succeed in getting IDC to portray Windows in a better light. NO COMPANY IN THE HISTORY OF COMPUTING HAS EVER, EVER DONE THAT!!!! SCOOP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! #3: Nice whitewash attempt. The key fact was that they tried, not that they failed. If they tried and failed in this one particular instance, how many other times have they tried and succeeded? But it doesn't really matter. Nowthat their less-than-stellar credibility is gone, it's forever gone. Nobody can believe an MS study ever again. Well, except for those willfully blind MS sycophants of which there are many on this site. And the fact that MS considered, until the last minute, hiding that they paid for the study underlines that even MS knows that paid-for studies are generally bogus, and that nobody believes MS' studies.
It also make you wonder what kinds of other shenanigans have gone on at Redmond. Yep, MS, you're awesome. The world leader in innovation, consumer concern, choice, competition... oh, and lying, stealing, hypocrisy, etc etc etc. |

#6 What is there to argue with?
Microsoft doesn't like studies that they consider inaccurate. And Microsoft correctly assumes that the ABM crowd won't believe any study funded by Microsoft. Even if all the study said was that the Earth revolves around the Sun a thread on Slashdot would appear refuting the study and accusing the company of authoring it as being a paid shill for Microsoft. Ho hum. What else is new? |
