Vista holds clues to Microsoft’s future | |

Now that Vista has been launched, just about everyone has heard about its new and improved Aero user interface, desktop search, security and various multimedia enhancements. But there’s far more to Vista than the features consumers will experience when they use the OS. Five years in the making, Vista — an evolutionary move rather than a revolutionary one — has broad implications for Microsoft. Inside Vista are clues about the future of Windows, and how Microsoft plans to position its number-one core product in the future. Vista represents a pivotal change for Microsoft for several reasons. For one, the company has been very public about how it changed its own internal development style to create Vista’s new architecture. Because previous versions of Windows had so many interdependencies between different parts and layers of the OS, Microsoft tried to create Vista as a modular OS with fewer interdependencies, which will ultimately make it more stable, says Al Gillen, an analyst with research firm IDC. | ||

I see shrinked wrapped Windows and Office still around for the next 15 years. The adoption of technologies like AnyTime Upgrade and Digital Locker won't be popular until the necessary cheap broadband infrastructure is pervasive for both consumers and businesses to accept it.
Obviously, a lot of the built in components in client Windows today such as Windows Mail, Win Cal, Contacts, Meeting Space, Photo Gallery, Defender are apps I see will be more online services instead of bundled with Windows. Again, an always on, constant access to the fast internet will be important for this to be successful. We can see some of this today also through features such as printing your photos through an online service, and the Windows Live Services themselves. Bill Gates recently said, the next version of Windows will be User Centric, where you will be able to access all your files, applications and settings on multiple PC's through a roaming profile experience. |

Let's see here...
"The first version of Windows to come out in 64-bit was Windows XP, and Vista will follow suit, but both XP and Vista are primarily 32-bit OSes." They did a large amount of the 64-bit porting in the 2000 timeframe. Remember, they released an Itanium version of XP in 2001. Server 2003 also came in Itanium versions. x64-specific porting was finished in 2005 with XP x64 and 2003 x64 (which are really the same product). The original Itanium version wasn't a complete port, so the statement "primarily 32-bit OSes" was true back then. Things like Windows Media Player and Themes weren't available back then. With the x64 versions, more was avialable in native x64, but parts still weren't. With Vista, however, virtually all code in the codebase is compiled for x86, x64, and Itanium. So it's wrong to call Vista primarily a 32-bit OS. When it comes to usage patterns (at least in for the next few years yet), people will primarily use the 32-bit version. But the 64-bit versions are just as viable. "It’s widely believed, and Microsoft has hinted, that Vista will be the last non-server version of Windows to come in a 32-bit format." I think this sentence is backwards. It's more likely that the server versions will be 64-bit-only sooner than the client. They've already done it for Exchange -- Exchange Server 2007 is 64-bit only. Servers (anything more complex than file serving) have more of a need for 64-bit OSes than clients. Plus many people still run DOS and Win16 apps on their clients, and those don't work on 64-bit Windows. |
