Microsoft answers Outlook 2007 critics on rendering-engine changes | |

Microsoft is attempting to appease Office 2007 users who have been up-in-arms over the company's decision to change the rendering engine in Outlook 2007. But the Softies are stopping short of promising to make changes to the product in order to restore backwards compatibility. Microsoft was caught off-guard by the outcry resulting from the Outlook 2007 rendering-engine changes, said Business Division Corporate Vice President Chris Capossela. Microsoft decided to make the Word 2007 rendering engine the default back in the beta-testing phase. Microsoft received overwhelmingly positive feedback from testers on the move, Capossela said. Starting in early 2007, however, a number of bloggers began complaining vociferiously that the rendering-engine changes broke their e-mail newsletters. | ||

The goal MS seems to have had is to be both more "standards" compliant, yet improve the security while also providing the means to ensure that email clients would be able to render HTML email - vice simply blocking it entirely.
By doing as they did, they reduced the surface area available to exploit, improved compliance and assured higher levels probability that an HTML email would actually render - perhaps a bit more slowly than IE 7/6 would do, but certainly better than being blocked outright. I assess that MS's goals are clearly evident in the results of the work - not one of which included angering their customers. The published documents and validation tools suggest they achieved the desired balance - however new the effort and results may be. I assess it is also a process that is headed in the right direction and that it will improve. If one looks at the tools and the spec, they can see that good results are possible and at less cost and in less time.... wasn't that part of the argument in favor of CSS/2 standards compliance? |
