If Microsoft made Vista available for legal retail download, would the masses come? Looks like we'll soon find out. The Redmond software vendor officially acknowledged on January 17 its plans to offer a Vista Family Pack. If you buy Vista Ultimate at retail, you will have the option of obtaining up to two copies of Vista Home Premium for $49.95 a piece. Microsoft also announced this evening official pricing for Vista upgrades if you purchase them via the Windows Anytime Upgrade program. Via Anytime Upgrade, a user may purchase a "key" that will allow him/her to unlock a more powerful version of Vista on the operating system DVD. | ||

Anywhere uprade has nothing to do with downloading, its just a key to unlock the feature, every vista dvd comes with all the versions as far as i'm aware its the key that comes on the box that determines your installation parameters, the anytime upgrade just unlocks the locked out features for a specific version as far as im aware... at most it might ask you for your vista install cd but i even doubt that |

Of course. We already do that via MSDN and I've never had a bum download yet.
If steep incentives, as suggested, are offered to retail owners of Ultimate, I certainly would download additional copies. It's cheap, easy and saves a trip to the store, and packing materials/shipping and waste. |

| Lets' say I buy Vista business and upgrade to Ultimate online. Once I do that I can download a couple more of Ultimate for 49.95 apiece. |

#3, From what I have read, the offer being considered is for buyers of retail copies of Vista Ultimate edition [full or upgrade], who would be allowed to buy two downloads of Vista Home Premium - which I guess might then be able to be upgraded via anytime upgrades.
The price is a good one < 50 bucks and good for people with multiple machines - I guess... I say, I guess it is okay, because people with multiple machines I know of - as few as four, also have a domain at home - arriving at that need when they get tired of managing a few machines. Home Server would end the need largely and make Home Premium an okay OS version to run, but not for all people - where W2K3 Server R2 and complete virtualization of the home professional and office workspace is desired. - that last scenario's use would probably shock many people at the number of small business owners that use it. In small business, the business owns the owner [in a lot of cases], which brings up why I don't much like all the differences in the Vista OS lineup - I wish there were just one version. I Know... any MS exec that would read such... would say anyone hoping for a single version is naive. All I have to say is try life out here at the small end of that buggy whip you're swinging around. |

| #4 but that makes no sense. If you have already bought the retail copy, why would you need to download the files, when all the versions are on the DVD? All you would need to download is the KEY, which would install the relevant version using the disc you already have. |

#5, Perhaps all one will have to access/download will be the additional keys...?
I don't know for certain, and no one else seems to either. I'm just saying that if offered at that price, the two added licenses would be a good deal and people would likely buy this way - full downloads, or just more keys - either way, it's a decent deal and saves on materials - a greener way of distributing the SW [though I do doubt that is the primary consideration driving this]. Shoot, we don't even know for certain if Microsoft will offer such incentives... be nice if they did - families would like it. The stories are also suggesting that perhaps not all versions are actually on the DVD's being distributed...? I don't know that for certain, either. Perhaps concerns about people cracking any protections arose and there has been a change in that regard. I just don't know - anyone have any more information on any of this? |

This effectively makes the "going rate" on vista home $50...you will be able to buy it on ebay for less than that :)
Is this for vista home basic or vista home premium? also both of these versions don't have remote desktop, which phucking stupid |

#7, As I Understand the proposed deal, it is for retail buyers of Windows Vista Ultimate, who by their patronage, gain access to two (2) < 50 dollar licenses of Windows Vista Home Premium edition.
Yes, it is daffy for Home Premium SKU's to not have the RDP Host - makes "Remote Access" in the Home Server product seem less meaningful - which is of course different from Remote Assistance, which is available for all SKU's. Maybe a hybrid - one version and micro-transactions under it for features like bit-locker, and IIS on present higher-end systems - or better still, One SKU and one price. ***Here's one that just kills me [as a business] - customer buys a system from Costco, or some other place based entirely on price, which is running XP MCE 2005 as many now do.... They call me under a service contract and want the system joined to a domain..... ACK! Nope - can't do it - can't even upgrade and I'm stuck selling a full copy of XP Pro [at cost] and eating the costs associated with installing and configuring the thing. Yeah, I guess one could hack XP MCE and join it up, and yes, I know how to do it, but IT IS WRONG and I won't have that. We need just one dang SKU. I could hope for one price, too, but that would be crazy to expect the same treatment Dell, or HP receive. Against, that, I can tell you, I know for certain, I make Microsoft's software "look" a lot better in the eyes of the customer than any big OEM does - I make it run better and it stays that way. #1 is right. Nothing has been mentioned about actually purchasing/downloading Vista by the net.
And what's with this "Domino's Pizza" plan for Vista Family Pack? You buy 5 high-end Domino's supreme pizza's for $50, and get a plain cheese small for only $3 more. If someone purchases Ultimate, you'd think they would also want the family pack's to be Ultimate, not Premium. TL |

| After a retail purchase upgrade or family pack keys are purchased directly from MS and downloaded. MS is also offering the complete Vista DVD download. I doubt many will take them up on it. It matters not if you hate or love MS. Both moves are brilliant, in that all the cash goes to MS with no middleman. |
