Microsoft's Ballmer Says Vista May Beat His Estimate | |

Microsoft Corp. Chief Executive Officer Steve Ballmer said sales of the company's Windows Vista software to businesses may exceed his initial estimates. We're very excited about where we are out of the chute with Windows Vista, Ballmer said today in an interview in New York. I expect to see uptake at a pretty good rate relative to my early expectations. Microsoft, the world's largest software maker, released Vista for corporate customers on Nov. 30 and plans to introduce the operating system for consumers on Jan. 30. The Redmond, Washington-based company is spending a record amount to market Vista, its first new version of Windows for personal computers in five years, in an effort to fuel revenue growth. | ||

| WSJ wrote last week that Vista Corporate Volume License sales are less than XP's were at the same point in time. Ballmer is not mentioning the dramatic discounts of Vista or other perks, such as Office 2007 Pro for customer employees to install and use at HOME for phenomenal discounts (to as little as $5, the discount varies depending on how badly MS wants the specific customer and if they can use their valuable name in marketing MS products), being given to Citi or other large corporate adopters of Vista. The same was/is true with XP and Office 2003. |

| #1, There's a lot in the story, I don't much like, either. I like the discounts for families and hope they continue. I sure would like to see a lot more even playing field out here - the distance between system builders and huge OEM's is really wide. |

#1 A little misleading. Vista sales to business are 4% less than XP sales to business AND consumers.
"Vista sales are 4% behind XP in its first month -- but XP was released to businesses and consumers together -- and 62.5% higher than Windows 2000 in its launch month. Big companies may be interested in adopting Vista sooner than expected: With XP, twice as many large and mid-sized companies bought volume licenses as small companies; in Vista's first month, the ratio was seven to three. Swenson: "That says that the large enterprises are actually very interested in this technology...
