Microsoft Extends Xbox 360 Warranty to One Year | |

In a move to benefit customers, Microsoft Corp. announced today that it will change the Xbox 360™ warranty from 90 days to one year from the date of purchase in the United States and Canada. Microsoft extended the warranty in these territories to be consistent with the standard one-year Xbox 360 warranty that is available throughout most of the world. The news is reason to celebrate this holiday season; it applies to both would-be purchasers and those who already have Xbox 360 and are still within their first year of ownership. Effective today, the one-year warranty is now the standard for the Xbox 360 console. Customers who experience hardware issues with their Xbox 360 within one year of purchase can have their consoles repaired at no cost. Moreover, the new warranty policy is retroactive, so consumers who may have already paid for an out-of-warranty Xbox 360 repair within one year of purchase will be eligible for reimbursement of their console repair charges. | ||

| Two obvious questions: Why was the warranty greater outside of North America? What kind of electronic product of any note has only a 90 day warranty? It's astonishing that MS has been able to get away with that up to this point. |

Canada and US were 90 days. The rest of the world was already 1 year I believe. I am happy because i just bought my xbox 360 3 weeks ago and was thinking about coughing up for the extended warranty. This post was edited by kaikara on Friday, December 22, 2006 at 20:26. |

| Perhaps Microsoft feels some confidence in the reliability of their system. And perhaps they were telling the truth when they said the failure rate was 3-4%, similiar to other consumer electronic devices. |

#1 Perhaps people outside of North America haven't yet been "sold" on purchasing goods with such short warranties. Most electronic products as you mention have at least a 12 month warranty on them whereas the good ones have at least a 3 - 5 year warranty. I remember when I was looking at building a house there was a company who had created these new type of brick from recycled bits and pieces or something to that extent. Purely from curiosity (as I had always wanted a double brick home) I inquired about their product only to find out their warranty was for 5 years!! I asked them how it was possible that my fridge has a longer warranty to which they could not give a good answer.

#1 remember laws in other countries are different too for faulty goods, UK for instance, massive stink would happen if a 360 died within a year regardless of warrenty.
No surprise to see it extended now - the early 360's were very unreliable, you only have to check the forums for details on how many have been dying over the last few months and you are able to return those no matter how long you've had it for no cost. New 360's are far more reliable. |

Possibly better consumer protection laws. The US is woefully behind in such things.
