U.S. intelligence officials said Islamic terrorists have picked economic-warfare targets inside the United States. This includes intelligence that al Qaeda terrorists plan to attack Microsoft's headquarters in Redmond, Wash. The data were among information found during military operations inside Afghanistan. Microsoft's sprawling "campus" is located west of Seattle and includes 47 buildings with a combined 5.3 million square feet of office space. The company's revenue last year was $25.3 billion. | ||

#4, mmmm, I don't think that AOL comes anywhere near MS in terms of revenue.
AOL provides a ISP or a few million people inside the US, MS does the same, and does a lot more outside the US with the ISP business, AND MS does a hell of a lot more.... Now maybe if you mean AOLTW as a whole company, then yeah, they generate more revenue. |

| Please, AOL is a 116 Billion Dollar company. Don't you think it would make more sense to take out something worth more and also valuable to the nation like a Boeing, a GE, a Raytheon, a GM, Ford, etc... Or how about Coke--they pretty much best represent the globalization of American culture better than anyone, of course, people love Coke the world over. The fact of the matter is: these guys have many targets--the article only mentions MS because so much wealth and investment is tied up in it. There are other targets just nearly as valuable (certainly more so than AOL) that they could hit and in the process have a more significant affect on the world's infrastructure. This is proably just the DOJ and MS working together again to satisfy each other's goals. |

What, you don't think this serves the government interest to get people concerned that terrorists are targeting economic targets? You don't think they are trying to get as much power and money as they can? And you don't think MS wants to be named as the most important economic resource in this country? Seriously, you don't think these terrorists didn't consider hitting Boeing which has some of the largest buildings in the country and which contains 30% of the planes to be made over the next five years, which if hit actually takes out the companies' assets whereas MS is mostly IP --so why weren't they mentioned? Do you think there was only one economic target--so why weren't the others mentioned? Are terrorists still targeting landmarks--so why wasn't the Golden Gate mentioned? FYI
AOL for the last 12 months had 38.2 Bil in sales. Microsoft had 26.8 Bil. This according to http://moneycentral.msn.com/investor/research/msnbc/profile.asp?Symbol=aol and http://moneycentral.msn.com/investor/research/msnbc/profile.asp?Symbol=msft. I'm a programmer and not a financial analyst, but by looking at the numbers I see, Microsoft is a much more stable company than is AOL. It doesn't much matter to me though, whether terrorists also have AOL in their sites. Rather than fight over which company is more important to the economy, how 'bout a little humanity and direct our anger against terrorists (or the propoganda artists if you don't believe in the terrorists). |

| Peter, I said what I said to be overly weird, paranoid, searching... I found this post ridiculous. Personally, I think any sort of panic or fear, even though we are exposed to attacks, is narrow-minded, shortsighted, and not healthy or helpful. This shouldn't affect Microosft's market value, it shouldn't be wished on any company, any conspiracy theory is in poor taste. Basically, I hoped I would be so crass and objectionable that the posts would stop, and there wouldn't be silly AOL-hate. Ah, oh well... |

By the way, Peter, that 116 Billion dollars is also spread out a hell of a lot more too, on both coasts, in Europe, worldwide (CNN, etc) etc... in many separate industries... and has no one central, large campus. This post was edited by sodajerk on Saturday, March 16, 2002 at 18:57. |
