As part of one of Microsoft's on-going lawsuits, a piece of email that I sent to Steve Ballmer and Bill Gates recently became public. It was a rant encouraging a change to the way we were building Windows at the time. In the email, I made a comment for effect about buying a Mac if I was not working at Microsoft. Taken out of context, this comment could be confusing. Let me set the record straight:
The spirit of being self-critical continues to flourish at Microsoft. Within Microsoft everyone considers it their duty to always put their convictions and our product quality ahead of everything else. That was the intent of my mail to Bill and Steve, and I consider it a great example of how this company can focus and do what's right for customers. | ||

Yes, the MS spin machine is a sight to behold. "Well yes, I said that but I didn't really mean it and Vista is perfect now." Right. Sort of like how Brad Goldberg is saying that they aren't going to publish a list of apps not compatible with Vista because it's better for consumers that they don't. Of course, it has nothing at all to do with the fact that such a list would be very long and very embarrassing to MS.
Meanwhile, there's yet another zero-day exploit for Word. It's amazing how all these stories are all over the web, but not at ActiveWin where the sun always shines on MS. |

| It's interesting how some people whine about Microsoft not providing better security, and then when they do they whine about how that security causes incompatibilies with some apps. |

#3, No kidding - reminds me of a poster - a horse with one hind leg over a fence line and the top most bar placed dangerously close to home.
Jim Allchin did the right thing more than once - first by shipping XP SP2 as a service pack, so it would not have to go through all the hoops of a full OS point release and again when Vista was re-set in 2004 - and not so much for the new OS itself, but for "how" the software was to be built, tested and deployed - all up front with far fewer surprises. He risked a great deal, but I do think that business and individual consumers were and are better off for it. I also think that characterising everything a man says as being spin is cutting a bit deep... - can we not at least accept that he might be sincere? So what you are saying ... if people download a word document from say ... a Russian Porn site it could cause trouble on the users PC? How many times does Windows make you click "Yes, go ahead and run that untrusted software from the web. We recommend against it, but its your PC". |

#5: MS recommends that you not open any unknown Word files, or files sent from someone you know but are not expected. Does that sound like a Russian porn site to you, Mr. Clue?

Good advice. Why do they do that? Word contains macros. But I'll ask again: How many times does Windows make you click "Yes, go ahead and run that untrusted software from the web. We recommend against it, but its your PC". |

#7: Your question is irrelevant (as usual). Just opening up a Word doc is supposedly enough to trigger the payload. The doc could come via email from your boss. Do you not think 99.9% of people would open such an email and then the document?

| Jim... grow a backbone honestly! If you want to buy a Mac be proud to say you want a Mac rather than trying to tell us some story about how it was actually a metaphor for change. The only thing confusing about that comment is that is seems to imply that for one reason or another he cannot purchase any non-Microsoft systems whilst working for Microsoft. Actually, that's not confusing, that's worrying! |

If you want to see a badly designed website with a combination of Word documents.
Go to Hotsoup.com. I don't know what their stupidq uestion of the day is, but click on one of the self-appointed morons answers and try to read it. It'll popup a two paragraph text answer in a Word document. I'm assuming the site was designed by Microsoft consulting services. |
