Nick White from the Windows Vista Blog writes: Roger Grimes, who serves as Security Advisor at InfoWorld, has gathered quite an extensive list of security features and enhancements that are shipping with Windows Vista to protect its users. He's counted more than 180, among them ASLR, Windows Defender and folder and registry key virtualization -- all of which are enabled by default. Roger suggests Microsoft has entered the realm of being a "secure OS vendor." | ||

#1 IIS5 to IIS6 was a huge improvement in security. Apache 2.x has 10 times the securityissues than IIS6.
SQL 2000 SP4 and above and SQL 2005 have excellent security. SQL 2005 has no known security holes and its been out over a year. Microsoft has made big improvements. |

| Well, you have to give MS credit for SQL Server 2005. It is definitely a big improvement in security and stability. I don't recall any previous SQL releases that lasted a whole year without a single exploit being developed against it. |

I'm reserving judgment until all of the new versions of those products (which are the first to go completely through the new Security Lifecycle Process) have been out a while. However, I would like to point out that Apple's OS X has have over 100 critical security holes this year. And Firefox alone has had 35 or so. And the Linux 2.6 kernel is over 100 security holes and RedHat 4 is over 200. IIS6 and SQL 2005 show what Microsoft can do. Other Vendors should try to aspire to the record Microsoft has for IIS6 and SQL 2005. |

#6: Keep in mind that in Parkkkers world, a piece of software can be a total piece of crap, with thousands of security holes, but it they never release a security patch, then they are more secure than other companies who actually release patches for their products.
This is why determining the security of a product based on the number of patches released is simply stupid. |
