PARIS -- European governments have long complained about their dependence on Microsoft's software, but their rhetoric has not turned into a mass migration away from Windows. During the past few years, Europe's elected officials have made a lot of noise about ambitious projects to switch to open source software, including big migrations of government PCs in France, Germany, Spain and Norway. These plans are often heralded as major inroads against Microsoft's Windows hegemony in the old country -- where Microsoft has been fined close to $1 billion in antitrust violations by the European Commission. Yet the actual migrations have been negligible. More than 95 percent of all PCs used by European government workers still run on Windows, according to the market research firm IDC. | ||

What I found amusing was that although Germany was referenced in the article the famous, now infamous, Munich "migration" to open sore has yet to take place - what is it now - five years in the offing? I guess they've become such a laughing stock, the author dare not mention them! lol
You can imagine all the scruffy open sore programmers, yes - still living in the basement at Mom and Dad's house, being lashed with venom from the likes of /dot and Tovalds, or whatever his name is, for allowing the 800 pound Guerrilla from Redmond to continue to squish them to oblivion. Wait . . . nothing in /dot about this article - its a total blackout! lol Meantime, in other bottom stories of the day . . . "Alpha Geeks have a new do-it-yourself project to terrorize the cat with: use Perl with a MacBook Pro's Sudden Motion Sensor to control a Roomba. Wired's Cult of Mac cites the original site which has other fun ways to pimp your Roomba . This gets my award for most inefficient use of tech, time, and training for the week. It won't freak out her cat nearly as much as a RoboRaptor on Roam mode. " Finally, coffee boy, must be - what - out getting coffee? I would expect that he would have been all over this story! |

#5: With Latch out, I thought I'd pitch Tide-To-Go, in N.America, or whatever it's called in Europe, Gain or Dash. Get it before the frappachino has a chace to dry. The stuff is awesome. Save me from being red faced after I stupidly spilled java on my white shirt pulling up to a meeting. A wet spot is far more attractive than a brown one.

shouldnt the people that bring lawsuit against you NOT use the product they are agaisnt? Doesnt that just prove everything Microsoft says- you have choice, but you choose Microsoft because it the only thing that actually does what you need? Especially when the other options are "FREE"!!!
its like AOL vs IE - AOL owned Netscape but yet the AOL browser was (and still is) based on IE! "IE has unfair advantage its bundled on the #1 OS"- of course AOL at the time being #1 ISP had no effect on IE becoming defacto standard?? or Real - "we cant win becuase Media Player is bundled and is a proprietary format" - hello, Real, how many bundles were you in on - why was it that every production PC in the late 90's / early 00's had your (proprietary) crap on it but you still lost - its becuase you suck, its because you were installing spyware with it and the people found out. I would love to see the whole EU go Linux - that should keep them busy and out of our way while we take care of all the problems they cause us, then they can come beg Microsoft to save them. |

| That's the problem with vendor lock-in. Even when you desperately want to get away from MS' security problems, unethical business practices and illegal leveraging of their monopoly, it's extremely hard to do in the practical sense. If only MS worked as hard at improving their products as they do at reinforcing their monopoly position, the computing world would be far better off. |

I think the majority of developers at MS would, if given the freedom, produce great software. It's the mentality that the Windows and Office Monopolies (tm) must be maintained at all costs that obscure these stars. I had hoped that Bill Gates in an architectural role would have changed this, but I can't say that I see any difference. (MS in the 1980s and early to mid 1990s was awesome.) |

I don't forsee Microsoft improving greatly in this regard while Gates and Balmer are still running the show. The BoD needs to get rid of Balmer (Gates is leaving on his own soon, but not soon enough) and let some new blood run things. A good corporate executive cleansing would do MS a world of good. Like ch says, there are a lot of talented people at MS who would love to put out quality software that meets the needs of average users, if only management would allow them the freedom to do so. But corporate politics is a powerful force.
The true evil rot in MS, and most other public companies too, is the system whereby share price must be increased, at the cost of all else, else the stock market players / shareholders punish the company by reducing the stock value. Remember that companies are in business to increase their stock price, and anything that accomplishes that is good, from their perspective, and anything that gets in the way of that is bad, again from their perspective. Customers are just shills whose only purpose in life is to buy more and more of corporate crap, to increase the corporate bottom line. Quality generally happens by accident, or because that is the only thing company B can add to the market, because Company A and Company B already have everything else in the product. There are some exceptions to this, of course, but they are more an exception than the rule. |
