When it comes to the question of whether we're in another bubble or not, I have to agree with Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates, not former "Microsoft chief blogger" Robert Scoble. The International Herald Tribune quoted Gates, speaking to a group of journalists in Brussels last Thursday, as saying: "We're back kind of in Internet-bubble era in terms of people thinking: 'O.K., traffic. We want traffic. We want traffic,' There are still some areas where it is unclear what's going to come out of that." | ||

The bubble is the space between the ears of many traffic oriented thinkers.
The reality is that democratized networks will win out - a balance between equally democratized private LANS/WANS and software and services that run on the web. The limitations on a "fat" client no longer apply - it is, in very granular ways, just as thin as one could want and simultaneously available for both localized services and as a member of a virtual named space - e.g., able to harness what it can do and add to the power of an enterprise [read, services]. ad-hoc networks of many types - some with people to people - others from workers to family and friends at home, or to connected devices - regardless of location - this is what Vista enables - same for the tools available to it. While it will likely take SP1/Kernel update and Longhorn Server to really see a lot of that - that is fine, too.... the planet needs this year to sort out some basics. But anyone that assesses that Bill is wrong, and Google is right - with the unpaid lock on your content and mine is placing a dangerous and wrong thinking bet. I said it before - Mr. Gates is moving on... he's bored and he's keeping his word. Scoble..? Neat guy - but dead wrong - he missed that "Socialization" of the net, is not the same as democratization of the net and that is the big difference here. Think of a democratized existence on your machine - where one must be in many places and roles at the same time - now - bolt that to a platform that can keep that all safe, compliant and "open" to how people not only work, but live. Web 2.0 does not come close to taking care of the first two - making the third irrelevant unless they are accounted for. The rest of the decade - all about compliance, and policy management - with enough flexibility to keep all of us sane. Wanting that to be different is not enough - too many bad people and too many lawyers and regulators. [as if it is easy to tell the difference among them]. |
