"Sun brings this action to restore competition in the markets in which Microsoft restrains competition by means of its monopoly power (and) to remedy the continuing harm that Sun has suffered as a result of Microsoft's illegal maintenance of monopolies over the PC operating system, Web browser, and office productivity suite markets, its unlawful attempt to monopolize the workgroup server market, and its unlawful exclusive dealing and tying practices. Such harm to Sun includes...diminished licensing fees, lost computer workstation sales, lost server sales, lost software product sales, lost sales of consulting services, and a diminution in value to Sun's trademarks, reputation, and goodwill." | ||

There's been some rumblings on Wall Street that Sun is committing suicide under McNealy. I can't find it now, but there was an article in one of the business rags questining that perhaps he should step down as CEO.
Reason? Lagging revenues, lagging profits, and no clear vision as to how to fix this. Just anti-Microsoft rhetoric... over and over and over... This lawsuit was a mistake, essentially Sun is making the same claim as Netscape that competition is bad for the market, and the government needs to step in and protect them. I mean look at their claims of harm. Every one of those is the result of fair competition, and really they are the result of IBM and Linux(exclusively, not in combination) moreso than Microsoft. Yet look at who McNealy has decided to focus on. Yes, this comment points out the bloody obvious. sue me. |

The ironic thing is that for the first time Microsoft isn't trying to leverage their Windows monoploy to advance a new product/platform... in this case, .NET, yet Sun places .NET at the very center of their case.

| I think that the SEC should seriously investigate who bought and sold Sun shares and when. The lawsuit is groundless but in spite of that the stock rose 15% when the news broke out. This also proof again and again how prepared and well documented are the so called "analysts" but this is another story. |

Actually, that market may be taken from them shortly by MS. Windows .NET Datacenter has support fo 64 CPUs and IIRC a limited version of .NET Datacenter is currently shipping. This post was edited by n4cer on Monday, March 11, 2002 at 11:49. |

Also of interest, but offtopic, is this article on AOL switching to Linux internally, and switching to Mozilla in AOL 8.

If the browsers implements W3C standards, there should really be much difference between them - extensions aside. Even with extensions, this really has NOTHING to do with .NET or passport - considering that .NET is about supporting multiple UI's this does include multiple browsers.
As for revenue streams...what revenue streams does AOL gain because it now uses a browser which it has owned for three years and hasn't used? Will they charge for the browser? |
