Administrators concerned that XP SP3 will be axed | |

With Microsoft Corp. now saying that its next major service pack for Windows XP will not ship until 2008, some Windows users are wondering whether the software upgrade will ever be released. "The fear is Service Pack 3 will just get killed off," said Jeff Centimano, an IT consultant with Levi, Ray & Shoup Inc., based in Kansas City, Missouri, who says that he's heard concerns from administrators since late last week, when Microsoft announced "preliminary" plans to ship SP 3 in the first half of 2008, later than previously expected. That puts the update within months of the early 2009 cut-off date for mainstream support for the XP operating system, and users like Centimano are now concerned that Microsoft may not feel that a Service Pack 3 is worth the effort. | ||

WHAT? Gawd, I am really tired of this one... Microsoft ALREADY provides excellent rollup resources for admins. If they are not using them - then doom on them.
First, there is Windows Update Services. Next up are imaging tools and tools to slip updates into these images and distribute them over the network. Then there are regular rollups that are shipped via CDROM - I have enough of the things I could shingle a roof with them. Good admins know this and they do not need SP3. They didn't need SP1. SP2 was an exception - that so fundamentally changed the OS that it would simply be inefficient to have shipped it differently - even in that case, good admins used a network install package and pushed it after testing their own builds and apps with it. If admins have not been using these and are not using them - then I recommend they shutup right now, or someone is going to start asking some basic questions - like, "How long have you worked here - not counting tomorrow????" | I think the concern about SP3 isn't so much about the updates as it is about the final support date for XP. If they release SP3 in 2008, that means we have until, what, 2013 until it is no longer supported? |

#2, Yeah, but once again - the pundits are trying to shape what people think and at the same time, suggesting that there are not enough resources out there... or support. They continuously embed one sucker punch after another - letting wild statements and speculation out as fact - all to undermine what both Microsoft and its partners do.
It's so political - everything is these days.... just bash, bash, bash, bash and keep bashing - no matter the vailidity and it is getting old. I do assess and using good form, admins and engineers simply need to counter with "High Road" factual responses as best one can. I mean hear, one obvious assertion is... "MS is slowing/dropping support for XP in an effort to force upgrades to Vista...." and at the same time suggesting, "MS Platform Admins are idiotic shills incapable of supporting "real" computers and networks...without a single click MSI/GUI to hold their moronic hands through even most basic of tasks." It's getting old and I assess we have to challenge it at every turn. |
