Microsoft Advises Users To Run Update Again | |

Windows users may have to update their PCs more than once to completely patch one of the vulnerabilities Microsoft fixed last week, the company's support site said Monday. Security update MS06-061 -- one of five labeled "critical" by Microsoft -- may install multiple versions of the XML Parser or XML Core Services when it's downloaded manually or via an automatic update mechanism. But "if you install a version of MSXML after you install this security update, you may have to install an additional package for this security update," read a Microsoft support document. That "additional package" can only be acquired by running Automatic Update a second time, said security company Symantec. | ||

| We had to apply this one manually. Hit the advisory sent out and opt for the version for IT Pro's - download it and push it via policy, or the management systems you are running - WSUS, etc... For home users, just install it manually - it runs the usual checks/restore point etc... and no restart is required, though I'd recommend one just the same. |

| Um, how is this news? You install updates on your computer, then you install additional software, and then you have more updates specific to that new software you just installed. How else would it work? |

| #2, in this case, because the auto update listed it as available and recommended, but its delivery under automated updates failed in some cases - ok, many cases. It left the potential for some users to assess that they had successfully received and applied all available updates, when and if unattended, they would not have otherwise noticed. |
