Microsoft Releases Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) Bypass Tool for OEM's | |

With the introduction of Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA), a computer must be validated as genuine prior to receiving security patches from Windows Update. Windows must first be activated for the validation tool to run, however most system builders do not activate computers on behalf of the end user. This poses a problem for system builders who want to sell systems pre-patched with updates but not enable automatic updates. The System Builder Bypass tool (sbbypass.exe) will allow system builders to download and install critical updates on new PCs without the requirement to activate or validate. Note that the tool will not run correctly without sysprep running on the computer. And to download the tool you need to be member of the OEM system builder program. | ||

Good of them to do this.
They cannot expect us to preserve and deliver the desired "out of the box experience" the license requires and then ask the poor devil of a new user to download and install a wad of updates, any more than they can ask us to ship a system that appears to our customers as being dated and less than complete. sysprep, by the by, comes in an awesome kit that partners receive - it is an amazing set of tools that sadly, very few small shops actually use. They'd make a lot more consistent revenue if they did. |

How long before some hackers get ahold of this and crack it to allow it to run with out the Sysprep option ???

| Even if that happened, they'd still need to crack Product Activation to be able to use Windows for an extended period, as well as the features that won't function on an unactivated system. Also, at any point, MS could update WGA and require download of the new version to install future updates. |
