Microsoft Plans Vista Upgrade Coupon For Holiday PC Buying Season | |

Microsoft later this month plans to roll out an Express Upgrade program that gives buyers of Windows XP-based PCs a coupon for a free or discounted upgrade to Windows Vista through March 15. As part of the deal, designed to drive PC sales though the holiday season, Microsoft will include coupons in each Windows XP SKU that will entitle users to a free or discounted Vista upgrade when the next-generation operating system ships in the first quarter of 2007, industry sources said. For instance, customers who buy PCs equipped with Windows XP Pro, Windows XP Pro Tablet PC Edition and Windows XP Pro x64 Edition are entitled to a free upgrade to Vista, sources said. Customers will be responsible for fulfillment costs. | ||

Sounds like Vista is RTMing earlier than originally thought. Yikes, I need to get cracking on our RTM review for AW. |

Here's my take on Vista in a nutshell:
New network stack - cool New UI - sucks IE 7 - sucks Ready Boost, Ready Drive, SuperFetch - cool That's about it... Am I missing anything? |

This coupon program seems like a good idea, but it falls short. First of all, the holiday buying season is primarily important to consumers--who usually buy PCs with Home Edition or Media Center Edition. The Home Edition coupon is only for ~1/2 off the normal upgrade price. And Media Center buyers don't appear to get any coupon at all.
Yet, the business-class editions (Pro, Tablet, x64), which aren't widely bought in the holiday season, are the ones that get the free upgrades. A nice try, but of little value. |
