Second third-party fix out for Windows bug | |

For the second time in as many weeks a group of security professionals has released a third-party fix for a Windows flaw that is actively being used in cyberattacks. The group, calling itself the Zeroday Emergency Response Team, or ZERT, created the patch so Windows users can protect their PCs while Microsoft works on an official update. People have a choice of third-party fixes. Security company Determina on Friday released a patch it authored for the same flaw. | ||

The story is quite misleading; it's not really a fix but just a runnable version of Microsoft's existing workarounds. Specifically, I downloaded the source code and it is amazingly simple -- all it does is set the relevant killbits in the registry. The same killbits that Microsoft's existing advisory tells you to set.
Competent IT departments have already taken Microsoft's advisory and deployed the killbits throughout their organization. The only people that this would benefit are home users -- and if a home user is skilled enough to find out that there's a third-party patch available, they'd probably be skilled enough to add the killbits themselves. I am contrasting this with the WMF exploit from earlier this year -- that third party patch actually modified the relevant files in memory to make the vulnerability unreachable. This patch, however, is nothing more than an embodiment of a Microsoft workaround. |
