Microsoft has recently moved to offer basic versions of MS Office online for free, in a direct strike on recent free web-based office "sniper" products such as Google's Writely and Sun's Open Office. Microsoft is planning free web-based versions of its word processing and spreadsheet programs. The online versions of the programs will lack many of the features found in the full versions found in Microsoft's Office suite of applications. Although the programs will be free to use, Microsoft is planning to fund them via advertising. No date has been set for when the free programs will show up on the net but the software giant told the Reuters news agency that it was "considering" new distribution and payment models for its software. | ||

| Office Suites have long been a mature market for word processing and spreadsheets. Open Office gets better all the time with a superb word processor, spreadsheet program, and Powerpoint clone. However, there is currently not suitable offset for Access that imports Access databases and runs them correctly. Access alone will keep Microsoft Office Professional alive and well for many years. |

#1, Please don't forget Microsoft Offices strongest features - collaboration and tight integration to SharePoint, Exchange and Unified Communications - not to mention KB Management solutions in RM/IRM. MS Office is so much more than desktop apps and it is very quickly bieng used as the basis for very powerful distributed work. Shoot, the list supporting this is very long... advanced presence alone, helps connect the right people at the right time, and that control is in .NET, too - same as the control for SSRS in SQL 05 - where company data, and customer data are turned in an instant to very compelling business and marketing intelligence product.
We do this all day - every day for our customers and blend it with our systems and managed networks. What is so cool is to see small companies grow from an idea to many millions in revenue and life changing growth for all the people that work in them. I've been so very forturnate to have seen this time and again and behind it is this very righ and affordable platform - based largely on MS Office. As I said, it is so much more! |
