Intel has socked about $1 billion into a struggling high-end computer server chip.
This week, Intel showed developers the second in its ''Itanium'' line of server processors, designed to give the company a toehold in the lucrative high-end computing market and expand its heft beyond PCs.
Intel's bet needs to pay off with this version, analysts say. Intel and design partner Hewlett-Packard have spent six years and $1 billion on the line.
''Intel and H-P are holding a party, and nobody's coming,'' says analyst Peter Kastner of the Aberdeen Group.
