Google Discloses Plans For Long-Awaited Office Suite | |

For such sharp rivals, the contests between Google and Microsoft have been laughably lopsided. Even as they jostle for users and software developers, Google has run away with the search traffic market while Microsoft has kept a lock on desktop software--like they're hardly even playing the same game. That's about to change, as Google readies a long-rumored push to assemble its E-mail, word processing, and spreadsheet apps into a Web-based suite that sounds more like Microsoft Office with each addition. Google this week will launch Google Apps for Your Domain, a software bundle aimed at small and midsize companies. The free, ad-supported package combines Google's E-mail, calendar, and instant messaging with Web site creation software. It will be hosted in Google's data center, branded with customers' domain names, and packaged with management tools for IT pros. | ||

Because there's nothing a large enterprise's IT shop likes to do more than outsource their critical services to a consumer-oriented company.

We've been privileged to sit in on another Google success story. Let's listen in at a gathering of a boardroom meeting between abc.corp and its competitor xyz.corp:
"Ok, here is our proposal for the acquisition of your company, xyz.corp . . . I guess that will have to wait. Our Internet connection seems to be down and our office productivity applications and all of our data are on the web . . . Doh!" I liked this line in the article, "Google is increasingly using its applications to entice Internet users to store more personal and business data on Google's servers." Of course, the author either go that from Google's dream machine . . . er . . . marketing group or pulled it out his/her fourth point of contact. |

| With the high functionality of OpenOffice 2.03 and Mozilla's Thunderbird e-mail client both of which reside on your local machine, Goggle's effort appears to be too late to be compelling as an offset to MS Office. |

Not to mention that there are already probably over 100 ajax word processors already on the web.
The only people using this will be home users who don't want to pay a premium for the best office software available. I doubt if even Latch will use this. |

| #3 Google's Writely allows you to save and open OO Writer files (as well as Word, RTF, PDF etc.) and Google Spreadsheets allow you to save and open XLS/csv files for the time being with OO Calc support being planned. So I doubt that these initial online offerings are supposed to be replacements for OO or MS Office for that matter. As the article itself states, these are to be the collaboration applications for those files. Note that Microsoft have "me too'ed!" all of this with all the Live offerings - fairly soon they'll abuse the Live word more than they abused the term .Net. |

There may be a place for these services, but there are just way too many issues at this point. Two big ones:
- No offline mode. Essentially, you have to build a client that can be downloaded locally... and by then, what's the point? You're right back at the thick-client model... only worse, because it's built on a browser. - No change management control. If they decide to upgrade the app, you get the upgrade--like it or not. If it breaks existing functionality, too bad. If it breaks some integration you've made with your internal systems, that's your problem. Google has been getting a huge amount of attention for its software offerings, but I have yet to see much that they actually write themselves. Almost everything they offer on the desktop side was existing software that they purchased. Granted, their presence on the web has popularized applications that wouldn't likely have seen broad adoption otherwise, but the point is that Google's power beyond Google.com so far has been more one of brand than it is software development. |
