  Lobb Goes Soft
Time: 07:47 EST/12:47 GMT | News Source: IGN | Posted By: Byron Hinson

IGNcube has learned that Nintendo of America's Ken Lobb has left the company to go to work for Microsoft. No reasons were given for the long-time producer's decision to resign. Ken Lobb has worked together with Nintendo and its second-parties for many years. His contribution on the Rare game GoldenEye earned him an immortal spot in the shooter as the Klobb Gun (Ken Lobb Gun). In more recent times, Lobb was involved with such GameCube projects as Star Wars Rogue Squadron 2: Rogue Leader and Metroid Prime. IGNcube has long admired Lobb's work and his dedication to Nintendo. His presence from the Nintendo side of the business will be greatly missed. With that, we wish him the best of luck on his new life with Microsoft.

Allright I will take the bait. #3 do you seriously believe what you are saying? If you didn't notice the other stories for today Halo won game of the year. Thats right game of the year period. And in case you didn't know it is powered by the xbox. And when you get down to the games nothing could touch halo from the likes of your beloved sony and nintendo.

Sony has 24 games that are "online?" Thats great and all but can I play any of them? And with my xbox I have built in support for online. If I have a ps2 I have to shell out close to 200 more bucks to add that functionality? No thanks. I will stick with the xbox.

"Honestly, the only way Microsoft will succeed with Xbox is to buy up any talent left in the world, since they don't have much of their own."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You mean like how Nintendo and Sony gained a lot of talent by buying other companies?

And other than "buying talent" (obviously forgetting the current talent at MS Games Division), at least there is a low point of entry for small developers wanting to publish their games in comparison to Nintendo and Sony.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"PC-ers don't realize this, but the Xbox is not a very good console. That comment has NOTHING to do with technology, it has everything to do with additude. Gee-whiz factor works alot for some people, but when you get down to the games, Xbox doesn't offer much, and inspires nothing."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just because someone owns a PC, or prefers it to a console does not mean they don't know what makes a good game or console. Perhaps the reason for their preference of the PC is that after 3D accelleration became the norm, it became evident of how lacking in power consoles were in comparison. I'm not saying power is everything, but I think consoles should at least keep up with the games developers want to make. Sony skimped on the tech side of the PS1 and continued this trend with PS2 (and will probably continue with PS3), and Nintendo, despite designing a system with only games in mind, made several mistakes. This resulted in the player not receiving a good overall expierience, and problems manifested in the form of games with constant low framerates (I'm talking about where you can see redraw and screen flicker), and games that don't look that good because of subpar geometry and texturing capability. A lot of people kept buying into this because of ignorance that things could be better.

PS2 and Gamecube, both launched with fewer games in number and quality. Many of the PS2 launch games were regarded as dissapointing and low quality, along with the majority of PS1's library. Gamecube's offerings are not much different than what was offered on the N64, and many were dissappointed in finding that the games were not what they expected (Like finding out that in Luigi's Mansion, the Mansion is the whole game). and the games don't generally target the same market segment as the average XBOX game, Nintendo going for the younger crowd.

"Did anyone notice Sony has already announced 24 online games? Where's Xbox's lineup, considering it's "the console" for online gaming? what a joke :)"
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Considering the PS2 has been available for 2+ years, I find it funny that they waited so long to start making online-capable titles. Where were they when people were enjoying Sega Dreamcast titles online? Microsoft's XBOX will have only been available 6-7 months when there games offer online capabilities. You will have greater adoption because they planned this from the beginning and included networking capabilities, and you will most likely have a more structured service. In the interim, there is always LAN play or online play through Gamespy or VPN. Going back to the power issue, you'll be more likely on XBOX than any other console to have multiple players on the same console playing online without worry of the console slowing to a crawl, or the game losing so much detail you can hardly see what's going on.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Microsoft has a good vision for technical software, but that doesn't mean they have it for gaming. Anyone who feels Nintendo isn't "with it" doesn't understand Nintendo. "
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Microsoft's games division makes some of the best games around. You may say PC games don't count, but if console games can be ported to the PC and accepted, why not the other way around? One of the most successful console games, Tomb Raider, was a PC port. id games which were successful on consoles were on the PC first (Though only Sega's consoles did those ports any justice).

Nintendo is clearly NOT "with it." You should be criticizing them for a lack of online availability the same way you criticized Microsoft. They should also be criticized for the large number of theme-variant titles, and non-innovative sequels. Sega was "with it." always pushing gaming and creating new genres. They were the first console-maker to embrace online gaming and give players that feature out-of-the-box. I find it sad, ironic, and funny that the same people that destroyed them as a console maker now praise them when they make a game for Sony or Nintendo's systems, yet get pissed when they focus their efforts on Microsoft's hardware. Microsoft shook up what had become (with Sega's departure) a complacent, minimally-innovative market. Perhaps Lobb wanted a place that was friendly to the needs of people not named Miyamoto.

Microsoft released a press release about a month ago, that said 40+ online games were actively in development. Find the press release yourself.

You know Nintendo is beat, when its proponents begin with the "the only way MS will win is if they " comments. I've seen that same comment time and time again. Bye bye.

Perhaps Lobb is sick of Nintendo releasing consoles with only Nintendo-produced games. I mean, really, how many Super Mario, Zelda, Metroid, and Pokemon variants can you have before no one takes you seriously anymore?

I went to Toys R Us and there was an XBox, a PS2, and a Gamecube display. The XBox had Halo (of course), the PS2 had some other game (didn't know what it was, but it was fairly impressive), and the GameCube had some Mario derivative.

I made a huge mistake in buying an N64 and I only have like 4 games for it, and 3 are Mario-based.

#7 By 3339 (65.198.47.10) at 3/3/2002 6:10:20 PM
How many games does XBox have in the top 20?

1? 2? 3? Last I remember, they dropped from 3 to 1. Halo is great... and they stole in from the Mac. The developers always said they wanted to continue producing Mac games and said it was viable. Meanwhile Microsoft has been lying saying that MGS "X" is coming to the XBox, but you can't get anyone at Konami to confirm that. (They only have 3 XBox titles listed thru April; they've got like 20 PS2 games.)

MS and Nintendo have very similar game title/per box sells--around 4; the PS2 is averaging about 11.

#8 By 3339 (65.198.47.10) at 3/3/2002 7:05:16 PM
Just go to XBox.com and Konami.com. If anybody at this site actually checked out the ActiveXBox section, they would know that this has been a running bone o contention for me--There have been a couple of MS types saying stuff like "We hope to have MGS available to you soon... blah, blah, blah." But the official word out of Konami for a while was no way, and then has been quiet since. When I mentioned this a few times, one of the site admins said that he wasn't going to remove it from ActiveXBox until the next big game conference, maybe, just maybe Konami will confirm then.

As for the ratings, I'm not a gamer, but I have been following this. And I guess I meant the top 10: in the beginning, they had 3, dropped to 1, and are back to 2. Hell, I made up (guessed at) the software sell thrus, but you didn't contest those numbers.

#9 By 2459 (66.25.124.8) at 3/3/2002 7:11:18 PM
Halo wasn't stolen from the Mac, it was never a Mac only title. Also if you do some checking, Sodajerk, you will find that Halo is still on track for a PC and Mac release.

As for MGS-X: It was confirmed long ago.

Actually, my estimates are very damn near accurate--unfortunately, a lot of XBox reporting goes to the wayside at this site so I can't dig up the most recent ActiveXBox story with sellthru data, but my approximation of 3 or 4 for XBox and GC is nearly accurate with the Xbox leading by .5 to 1 over the GC--taking the numbers from the most recent updates from this site. The PS2 is way ahead--up around 11. I don't know why the launch sellthrus are more important to you, #18; I guess because they at least could be interpreted as good, but why not look at the whole picture to the present day? For example, the Japanese sell thru for the XBox is only around 1.5--but again, this article that was available last week at THIS site is also gone now too.
