Microsoft reaches out to Firefox developers
Time: 17:08 EST/22:08 GMT | News Source: News.com | Posted By: Jonathan Tigner

The head of Microsoft's open-source business has offered to help get Firefox to work with Windows Vista, but it remains to be seen whether Mozilla and the open-source community will respond positively.

Sam Ramji, the director of Microsoft's open-source software lab, posted an open invitation for them to work with the software giant on a Mozilla development discussion group mailing list Monday.

"I'm writing to see if you are open to some 1:1 support in getting Firefox and Thunderbird to run on Vista," Ramji wrote. Mozilla oversees the development of the open-source Firefox Web browser and Thunderbird e-mail client.

What a black eye for open source.

First Firefox 2.0 is delayed a couple of months because of bugginess and lack of new features, and now Microsoft humilates them by pointing out the Firefox "team" can't get Firefox to run on Vista.

#2 By 1288 (65.27.246.235) at 8/23/2006 1:25:21 AM
Firefox works fine on Vista for me as well. It was the first thing I installed on it!

#1: I know what you mean. I'd be embarrassed to be seen going to Microsoft too. But at least it isn't all bad. Hopefully the Mozilla devs can help get Vista back on track with FOSS methods.

btw did you see this story yesterday where MS got slapped down for stealing other people's technology (as usual) and then being scumbags in court (as usual)? Too funny. But MS is sure that they (as usual) haven't done anything wrong. Poor Microsoft.

#2,3: Of course it works. Parkkker would never know as he's taken a vow of non-MS celibacy.

This appears to be a well thought out PR action on the part of MS, to cast doubt on a product that already works by offering to help the "poor little thing" do a better job. More than likely any team work would result in MS getting insight into non-MS innovations to include in IE.

#1: First Firefox 2.0 is delayed a couple of months because of bugginess and lack of new features...

Substitute "Vista" and "years" for "Firefox 2.0" and "months" and your statement still hold true.

#5: This appears to be a well thought out PR action on the part of MS...

So, very true.

These are classic MS tactics here. First, you refuse to even acknowledge competition. Then you call the competitor's product crud and start a disinformation campaign. After that comes, the "if our customers wanted it we'd make it" line. Next, years of vaporware announcements. Then, you resort to the assimilation tactics. Finally, you either drove them out of business, bought them out, or tied them up in court for so long that the technology has been antiquated or customers have doubts about licensing.

#4: Parkkker would never know as he's taken a vow of non-MS celibacy.

lol... Except for their stock, of which, alas, he appears to own none. He's a MS zealot wanna-be.

#6 "Substitute "Vista" and "years" for "Firefox 2.0" and "months" and your statement still hold true."

Considering how big a change Vista is and how little a change Firefox 2.0 is, even an OSS fanatic would be embarrassed to equate them ... especially one who pretends to own MS stock.

Firefox 2.0 is feature poor and very late. But then again, a dozen serious security holes a month does tend to suck up developer time. And then the developers drift away ... because fixing bugs is boring, and OSS developers tend to flock to trendy projects and leave when its time to fix bugs.

FYI AWguys, your Adserver, ad.yieldmanager.com, is being blocked by SpywareDoctor as a known spyware distribution point.

And there's that flippin' mosquito again.

Why do you do business with those people?

#7: It boggles my mind how you can criticize anyone for things that your precious, precious Microsoft has done far worse for far longer. How do you reconcile your faulty beliefs with reality?

#9 coffee girl, what are you babbling on about?

#10: billc?!? Is that you? Still dodging the tough questions...

#7: especially one who pretends to own MS stock

I don't pretend--I don't have to. I hold MS accountable, because I have "skin in the game" due to my career and my MSFT shares. I guess zealots wanna-bes can't imagine a position of moderation from their extremist viewpoint.

I believe MS makes some good products, but I also find use of OSS solutions. The use of one does not preclude the use of another (in my centrist mind). I use Firefox because it is a superior product. I also use several open source developer toolkits. I use Windows versions from 98 through XP SP2 and Windows Server 2003. And I still use older versions of MS Office. NotParker, I know this may be a subtle nuance for you to pick up on, but I hardly qualify as an OSS fanatic.

Moderation is a wonderful thing, NotParker, you should try it sometime.

Come on now, give him a break. Its hard for minors to buy stock. I'm sure as soon as his 18nth birthday comes...

#11: Sorry, but your +4 Hammer of Reality is no match for Parkkker's +10 Cloak of Idiocy.

#13: He has to learn the complexities of a french fry machine before he can worry about the markets. Besides, how many shares of MS can he buy on minimum wage?

lol... World of ActiveWinCraft!

#12: I don't believe a word of what you say.

Of course, you don't. You live in your own little world. And, frankly, arguing with a crazy person is pointless. So, you go right ahead with your contrived reality. I will say this, however, and it will settle the matter for all to see. Here's a proposal for you: we each escrow $500, say via Paypal, to an AW moderator. If I can't prove my MSFT stock ownership for years, you get my $500, plus your own back. Otherwise, I get your $500, plus my own back. You have nothing to lose and only to gain if you truly believe I'm lying.

AW viewers check back soon to see if NotParker will put money where his mouth is...

I still don't believe you.

And giving out my home address to OSS fanatics is the last thing an intelligent person would do.

And, Firefox 2.0 is still late, and still short of any compelling features. And IE7 is coming up on RC1 and it is chock full of compelling features. I think that is something to cheer about. SO would a real MSFT stockholder. Of course if you had 1 share of MSFT and say 1000 shares of RedHat, that might explain your anti-Microsoft position.

An AW moderator can be the liaison, since they already know who you really are. (I could care less to know any more about you.)

The challenge was put out and, as I completely expected, you're a fraud. You have lost all credibility in my eyes and I'm sure in the eyes of all others who frequent these forums.

#17 By 32132 (64.180.219.241) at 8/23/2006 10:44:19 PM
I'm a fraud because I don't like Firefox?

The significantly less scatlogical than usual from the OSS fanatics.

You're the fraud.

I'm so enjoying Parkkker getting his ass handed to him yet again.

#6 and #7: Lets compare apples and apples, so to speak. FireFox 2.0 may be months late, and not have a ton of visible changes, but there is plenty of changes under the hood. IE 7, however, is several YEARS late in the making, has very little that is new and original, and basically brings it up to the level of FireFox and Opera. And not nearly as standards compliant as Opera. Neither is FireFox, for that matter, as far as ACID2 compliance is concerned. But the real test will be when IE 7 and FireFox 2 come out, to see which ofthe two of them come closer to passing the ACID2 tests.

#14: You forgot about his +28 Shield of MS Ignorance. It prevents him from seeing and comprehending anything Microsoft does wrong.

#19: Why? Parkker is a MS fanatic whose opinions are barely worth the bits they are comprised of, and who resorts to name calling when he can't make a convincing counter-arguement to any anti-MS facts stated in these message boards.

#20 By 32132 (64.180.219.241) at 8/24/2006 11:26:30 AM
"FireFox 2.0 may be months late, and not have a ton of visible changes"

Yup. Thats the point I've been making. Thanks for confirming.

I win.

#21 By 37047 (216.191.227.68) at 8/24/2006 1:12:17 PM
#21: Who gave you permission to leave the fryer? Since you are clearly stating that only UI changes count, then Vista is going to be a horrible letdown, since it is years late, and only has a few UI changes. All the stuff under the hood, doesn't count, according to you. IE 7 is only a very minor update, many years late, with only enough UI updates to bring it up to the standard of FireFox 1.0. Therefore, you lose. Thanks for playing. Here is the home edition for you, so you can go home and continue to play with yourself.

I see the +28 Shield of Ignorance is working as expected.
