Microsoft curries favor with undergrads | |

Microsoft on Thursday released software development tools aimed at college-level computer science students, hoping it will produce a fresh crop of software programmers loyal to its Windows and .Net technology. The software maker has shipped a version of its new Visual Studio.Net tools with specific features for educational use. Visual Studio.Net is the latest version of Microsoft's development tools that allow people to write Web-based software and services. As part of its overarching .Net software strategy, the company earlier this month released three versions of the tools aimed at the corporate market. | ||

#10 - You contradicted yourself in point #8. It's like claiming someone should not buy a Honda Civic if they want a car with an automatic because it's also available in a 5 speed...
CS ends up using multiple environments and multiple languages to teach concepts. It would seem to me that you would not wish to teach someone the joys of pure C++ by using managed C++. You also would not wish to teach someone the productivity benefits of a strongly typed language implemented within a virtual machine by using unmanaged C++, or even Assembler. So obviously assignments would be taught using the environment or tool which would best work in teaching the concepts. Good grief, the class I had on language design we utilized something like a dozen different languages in one semester. Most of this was on the Unix host, but the assignments with Smalltalk were done on the Macintoshes. This isn't a terribly new concept. I look forward to more of your precious contradictory insights. |

asowalsky - WPA doesn't exist on the commercial versions of VS.Net. At least it didn't on the VS C# standard edition I purchased at home. It did on the VS.Net trial copy I received(which is somewhat understandable on a trial), but I've been told the MSDN versions do not have it.
It's my understanding that the Academic releases do have WPA. |

Agreed. Universities are heavily one vendor... whichever vendor gave them the most money to buy equipment to build a lab.
#15 - Junior College generally only offers 2 year degrees. These are called Associate degrees, rather than Bachelor. For some jobs that is all that is required. Other times people will go to the Junior colleges to get their essential courses out of the way and then transfer to a 4-year college to finish a degree. |
