Vista Needs More Time: The Entry I Didn't Want To Write | |

I've been defending Microsoft's ship schedule for Windows Vista for quite some time. Up to this point, I've been confident that Vista would be at the quality level it needs to be by RC1 to make the launch fantastic. Having tested several builds between Beta 2 and today, I hate to say that I no longer feel that way. Beta 2 was a disappointment on many levels. It was nowhere near as stable as it should have been, and was a huge memory hog. Later builds have improved stability and performance, and have introduced visual tweaks and enhancements that make Vista feel more like a finished product. But several events are conspiring to make life a lot more difficult for beta testers, and I forsee problems if they are not addressed. | ||

They've made a lot of progress since Beta 2, but... I get the impression they're trying to make miracles happen by getting this out the door by the stated release date (for some reason, it reminds me a little of the scrambling at the end of the movie "Gung Ho," where Michael Keaton imitates the sound of wiping glass on a windshield that wasn't there--anyone remember that? Not a great movie, but anyways...). No one wants a half-baked RTM. Since the consumer availability won't be 2006 anyways, why not simply give it another month or two? In fact, I'm really surprised they didn't do that in the first place.
At any rate, I'm pretty much banking on them delaying it further. There seems to be little reason--other than weathering yet more frothing-at-the-mouth Slashdot nonsense--not to do so, unless they really believe they can sew this thing up in time. |

| I hope someone involved in the development of Vista writes a tell all book about the whole process when this is all over. I'd love to know what the heck really has been going on over on the Redmond campus for the past 5 years... |

I'd bet that XP SP2, IE 7 [essentially a re-write of how COM is handled across the entire platform] and R2 for W2K3 bit very deeply into dependent resources and teams - all adding up to 24+ months of delays.
Then there was "N" versions of XP to satiate the EU - good God that one still burns me. "Basically gut your OS... just cuz....." So what we really have here is a very deep commitment to support the products Microsoft had in the market and what was a decision to not only patch the problems that arose of ceaseless attacks on the software by highly organized and skilled criminals - how could anyone have known just how pervasive such attacks would become, but a long term commitment to fixing the underlying causes of such problems. I wish governments would all do the same relative to their challenges. It's all kind of sad, too - since all of the vulnerabilities that forced this diversion of energy could have and I assess should have been, mitigated by companies and people responsibly operating their networks and systems. As much as I welcomed SP2 and like it, it was not at all needed by anyone doing "their" jobs properly. The press, too was/is just as wrong in these cases as it is about world affairs... simply idiotic! I assess one has to admire MS for how it responded - I doubt any other company would have done anything close to what they did. So now... all line up to dump on them over delays... Just once, I'd like to see these same people do "anything" - anthing at all. The only tell all internal story here seems to be about a bunch of very skilled people breaking their backsides to do the best job possible and in a way that establishes a very high standard for caring for customers. |
