Whatever happened to the "12 tenets," announced just 10 days ago, that were supposed to help a seemingly humbled and repentant Microsoft assume a more ethical stance toward allowing competition? Could it be that its self-imposed 12-step program has already failed to cure Microsoft of its monopolistic impulses? First case in point: the amusing news--posted by a TechWeb reporter--that the preview of Microsoft's newly renovated home page provided Internet Explorer users with a new search tool and site guide, while users of the open-source Firefox browser were insulted with a "We're sorry, the page you requested could not be found" error message. | ||

| MS has a long history of talking about how it will do the right thing. Unfortunately, its actions rarely seem to follow its words in this regard. |

So Microsoft releases a preview, unfinished program and everybody is screaming that they are trying to bloc out other browsers. And yet, this happens:

I think that the FF org is purposely trying to block MS and Real software to bolster their position in the OSS media players. If MS had done simething similar to block out DivX, who's head would the OSS community be asking for? |

When do you think Firefox will be out of beta?
Will they run out of 1.5.0.x numbers first? Will they rush out 1.5.0.6 early so they can keep the serious security holes in this release below 12? |

| #5: They will stop releasing pre-beta quality software as a shipping version when they can change the number in 200 at http://www.spreadfirefox.com/node/24502 to (# Of copies of Windows Sold + 1), and claim that they are the most used software. It does not make a difference if the 12 people who actually use FF downloaded 16666666.666666666666666666666667 copies each, they still have 200 million downloads, so therefore they win! |

#6: btw that bug you mentioned has already been fixed and patched. 5 day turnaround for the release of the fix. Not bad. Meanwhile, you'll get a patch for last month's batch of Windows holes in a week or so.

#7 Actually, according to bugzilla, they are still working on it. Which is a surprise, since almost every security fix for Firefox in the last 4 months (about 40 or so) has been kept secret in Bugzilla.

#9: I assumed it was fixed in the new 1.5.0.6 since they were talking about a quick release after 1.5.0.5 just to address this specific issue. Bugzilla probably hasn't been updated or something. Meanwhile, I don't know why you keep harping on this "Mozilla bugs are SECRET!" nonsense, considering ALL of MS' bugs are secret until the patch appears. As usual, you criticize others for behaviour that your precious, precious MS does far worse. And besides, Bugzilla isn't secret -- you just haven't logged in yet, dummy.

#3 - I looked at that bug report and was thinking, how could they *not* have caught that in testing before release?
People wonder why it takes Microsoft so long to release a security patch--that's because of the extensive testing required to verify that you didn't break anything. And when you have hundreds of millions of users, there's a big chance that something you did--no matter how innocent--could break something somewhere out there. Yes, there have been a few MS patches that have broken things and have needed to be re-issued. But considering how many different possible configurations there are out there, I think they do a pretty darn good job in releasing a solid patch the first time. #7 - It doesn't matter that they fixed the WMP regression in 5 days. The point is, that people upgraded to 1.5.0.5 and it broke things. They should've spent a little bit more time doing more extensive testing before releasing 1.5.0.5 in the first place. |
