Burn slower or risk data loss, warns Microsoft | |

Microsoft has warned public beta testers to burn downloaded Vista ISOs to disc at speeds as slow as 1X or 2X in order to get a reliable burn. It says a key reason behind installation failure of Vista is that many DVD burners cannot reliably burn a disc at high speed. The interesting tidbit was included in the release notes for the interim update to Vista Beta 2 (build 5456.5; not publicly available) and sheds light on the magnitude of the problem of unreliable DVD burns | ||

| I use cheap DVD disks. The fastest I can burn with them is 8x. I have not had any issues with other images or with burning a True Image backup image using the cheap 8x disks. However, I did have to burn the lastest Vista build at 2x. 8x disks were coasters. Must be the disks or the burner. Must be. Microsoft has warned us. Maybe they are right and I've been lucky burning at 8x until Vista came along. Must be. Can't be their images. |

bob, I've burned a ton of disks over the years and cheap media has bitten me far too often. In my experience, there are some media brands that are prone to error on certain brands/models of drives.
I hate to say it, but I'm better off buying the name-brand media. |

I have burnt all of my Vista ISO files at 8X and have not had any problems with my installations. It must be the cheap media that some people chose to use....

| I've burnt all of my images at 8x also without any problems. I don't own any cheap media on the other hand either. |

No-name media isn't worth the money it costs. While some of it is OEMed from a decent manufacturer, a lot of it is garbage. I've never had a problem with Maxell or Verbatim.
