Why Microsoft would want WGA to phone home | |

As the debate over Windows Genuine Advantage rages on, Microsoft is attempting to rein in speculation that the antipiracy tool could be used put an abrupt end to the use of pirated versions of Windows. A spokesperson for the company firmly denied that the tool would be used in such a manner, saying that "No, Microsoft antipiracy technologies cannot and will not turn off your computer." Confusion remains over just what WGA is designed to do. | ||

| WGA is annoying. What MS says today is subject to change tomorrow. It should flash a single message if it deems your product key pirated. If the key is valid it should then lead you to a support site where you have the option of speaking to a person to correct the problem and not take you to a web page where they try to sell you an OEM XP Pro copy for $149. WGA is scary to the average user that has done nothing wrong. For some reason MS believe their WGA program is infallible and gave no thought to the possibility that the program may make mistakes. |

In cases like this we should assume the worst until MS can show otherwise. They deliberately lied (by omission) about some of the function of WGA. So what does it really do on every boot? Ive read their excuse about turning it off if something were to go wrong. But what the hell does that mean? I dont understand what theyre trying to say.
Now its not going to phone home as much. Well thats still too often. Once is enough. PERIOD. If Im legit today, how will I suddenly be illegitimate tomorrow? This seems like something that would be used for a subscription based product. Maybe thats what theyre really testing for. |

I am amazed by some of you that cannot grasp why the validity of the OS would need to be be kept up to date. Was MS wrong in not letting it's customers know that it would do this? Absolutely. However the only way to future proof the system is to reverify occasionally.
Those of you who know how fast these things can be broken and worked around should understand that. Your lack of understanding disturbs me. |
