  Trouble ahead, trouble behind
Time: 11:06 EST/16:06 GMT | News Source: CNET | Posted By: Robert Stein

Totalitarianism. Urban pathology. The death of creativity. These are the fears that keep John Perry Barlow awake at night. The co-founder of the 12-year-old Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) tries not to be bleak. But he sincerely worries that Microsoft will usurp e-commerce and AOL Time Warner will seize media, and the two forces will extinguish dissenting voices in a "diabolical" plot to own the economy and the human mind.

But Barlow, perhaps best known as a lyricist for the Grateful Dead, isn't entirely forlorn. He's optimistic that courts will soon strike down the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), a 1998 agreement that banned online distribution of companies' intellectual property. And he's hopeful that Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates--the smartest man Barlow says he's ever met--will hatch a plan to control the Internet that is so ridiculous that it will spark a public boycott that ultimately will topple the software giant.

After totalitarianism, what's the next biggest battle brewing in cyberspace?

There are a lot of things connected to totalitarianism, such as the ability to affect the technical architecture of the Net and the increasing number of standards and protocols that are being passed down by the likes of Microsoft. I worry that the Net is closing. I would say that (Microsoft e-commerce initiatives) .Net and HailStorm are huge threats and really diabolical. The problem is that hardly anybody recognizes it because they don't know what .Net is or how it works. They don't know that Microsoft is trying to own all of your transactions, literally.

To play devil's advocate, isn't Microsoft simply selling a product that millions of people are willing to purchase at their own will?

Oh, come on. People aren't willing. Microsoft is giving people what Microsoft wants because it has a monopoly, which isn't based on the value of the product but rather a positive feedback loop in the information economy: Everything is compatible with Windows, ergo, Windows prevails and continues to prevail regardless of its liabilities. It's No. 1 because it's No. 1, period, not because it's valuable. In fact, it's become totally diabolical.

You paint a pretty gloomy picture. How can we stop Big Brother Inc.?

People could simply boycott the products. Frankly, I think anybody's a fool to put (Microsoft operating system Windows) XP on their computer. It's like installing a continuous, 24-hour monitor on your mind. But people are doing it like crazy because they don't know any better.

This guy is a nut-case.

I love how he tried to compare Microsoft to Big Brother...

Yeah this guy did to much DDT in the 60's. :)

As a civil libertarian, I've got just as much fear about totalitarian rule as Barlow. The difference is that I realize that unless Microsoft develops a standing army, and uses tanks to control people's purchasing habits; there is no danger of Microsoft of any other company owning "the economy and the human mind."

In our society, corporate power comes from two places: consumer purchasing, and corrupt politicians.

Guess what! We have control over both. We can stop buying Windows, and we can stop electing politicians who chose the all-mighty green back over what's best for the country.

If Microsoft starts trying to "control my mind", I'll stop using their products. In a flash, a huge amount of their power disappears. Well, as soon as enough people agree with me, that is.

Alas, people seem too blind to see that any unlawful power Microsoft may have comes not from Bill Gates, but from Uncle Sam.

Wow, another great example of a fair-handed article at CNET. Give me a break. These losers (anti-Microsofties) must be feeling like they are losing... as they are beginning to mention "boycott". LOL.

This guy sounds like he's writing a comic book or something... Microsoft is "diabolical"... kinda like a foe of Spider-Man?

This guy (and MANY of the open-sourcers) are nothing more than modern-age communists/socialists. That is the straight story. They don't really see Microsoft as evil... but really see capitalism as evil. But just wait until Adam Smith's "Invisible Hand" crushes their unnatural ideas into dust.

And don't you absolutely love his answer to a direct question?
---
If Windows is so bad, why does Apple have a meager 4 percent market share?
Four? Really? Jesus. They really blew that one.
---

LOL. Stick to your soon-to-be-defunct EFF.

#17 - While I agree both parties are corrupt, the people that own the GOP are a lot scarier than the people that own the Democrats.

It's oil companies versus teachers unions. That's a bit of a mismatch.

In addition, the GOP gets (and spends) nearly 20 times the money that the Democrats get/spend.

#20 - Go to opensecrets.org. Go to the Who's Getting tab, and select Political Parties.

#19 - No, I don't see any truth to what he says. Now as far as attacking his arguments. What is his argument? Look at it... It is entirely ad hominem. "Microsoft is evil"

Then it seems rather logical that the response to this is "Microsoft isn't evil, this man is simply a crackhead." Drug abuse has frequently lead to paranoia, which is one of the mental illnesses that this man obviously suffers from.

#20 -

For the 2000 Presidential Election:

Bush received $85 million+ in soft money alone. Compare this with $29 million is soft money for the Democrats.

#23 - So you think we would have dropped out of multiple world-wide treaties, dropped countless environmental policies, had the economy go in the potty, and be laughed at by everybody else in the world if Gore had won? (Or rather, if he had been placed in office.) Well... perhaps the laughing part.

The President has a great deal of power in the United States. Granted, that power is dulled by the will of the people, but when you have the nationalistic mentality that has become popular (almost manditory) these days, the President can push his agenda quite far.

#27 - Uhh, I don't think you understand what I wrote. Go back, reread it and think about it for a minute.

Hint: I never claimed to not be arguing ad hominem, I fully embraced it as it is the only reasonable response to an article which is nothing but ad hominem attacks.

And no, labeling someone as mentally ill is not considered practicing medicine without a license.

#28 - LOL.

It also helps that most Republicans are rich. (Which is often a big reason why they are republicans.) Republicans are a numerical minority in the United States, but get many times the campaign contributions. A lot of that has to do with the fact that businesses have a lot more to gain by buying an election for a Republican than they do a Democrat.

Personally, I find Republicans walking contradictions. They are pro-liberty when it comes to getting the government out of their pockets, but are more than willing to force their morals down other people's throats using that same government. Obviously the Democrats have the same contradiction (on the flip side), but I think they are a bit less dangerous. Just IMHO of course. :-)

I'm not a Democrat (again, I hate hypocrisy), but last 8 years haven't exactly been hell. The country had the best economy in history, which is almost always the only thing most Americans care about. And please, don't feed me the baloney that it was thanks to the 12 years of Republican rule pre-Clinton. The economy doesn't have a lag time that just-so-happens to directly correspond to the Republicans leaving office.

Don't get me wrong, it wasn't Clinton's policies that gave us the great economy, but it sure as hell wasn't Regan's either.

Anyway, this is way off topic. :-) The point is, our government has gone into the crapper thanks to the For-Sale politicians. I'm not sure how to fix it, but I know it needs to be fixed.
