Performance Enhancements Coming in Windows Vista | |

Ever come back from lunch and find that your computer is running really slow after you log back in? The reason for this is that a number of processes that were waiting for your machine to be idle have probably kicked off and have loaded into memory causing the currently loaded applications to page to disk. Then when you get back to your machine it has to access these off the disk again and put them back in memory causing the machine to feel sluggish. In his talk today at TechEd entitled Windows Vista System Performance Enhancement Matt Ayers offered insight into this and other common problems that cause performance problems in today’s system and what Superfetch, ReadyBoost, and Readydrive are going to do to help alleviate many of these pain point in Windows Vista. | ||

| Troll time. What would Henry Ford have called moving from a hand crank start, which was sluggish, to an electric starter on his cars in the early20th century? Superfetch, Readyboost, and Readydrive seem like great names for car advancements in the late 18th and 20th centuries. Looks like Windows is beginning to move beyond the hand crank stage. |

| Considering flash memory is getting cheaper all the time, instant-on technology is finally something that can be realized. In fact, start a new paradigm where each PC has a hard disk for storage and a flash module for the OS image. Mirror the image on the hard disk for consistency's sake. Have the BIOS load the image from flash and then start at some defined entry point. No more booting up, unless you choose to reboot the system or the inevitable Window reboot after practically any update. |

| Didn't I read somewhere that Vista Server will have a requirement for some sort of flash hybrid drive in order to operate? This idea of booting from flash memory is closer than one might imagine. And, it might even be possible to boot from a flash drive that has Windows installed on it, if it was created by someone who knew what they were doing. Give it a few years (or 10), and Microsoft will be selling Windows on flash drives, and you will pay to personally license the software, and merely take the flash drive with you from system to system, so that any system you plug the drive into will be your own Windows (or Linux or whatever OS you wish) environment, complete with your configuration files. A second flash drive would hold your personal files. |

| I think you read the article from a few days ago about hybrid drives possibly being a requirement for the Windows Vista Premium Ready logo program. No version of "Longhorn" will require a hybrid drive to boot. |
