Users don't buy operating systems for operating systems' sake; they buy them for the applications that run on them. Given that truism, it's not too early to wonder about the whereabouts of Windows-Vista-optimized apps. Microsoft will have showcase applications ready in time for the Vista launch, which is still set for January 2007, company officials said. But given recent lawsuits and public disagreements with the likes of Symantec and Adobe Systems—two of Microsoft's biggest ISV partners—which vendors are likely to be leading the Vista charge? | ||

I think that the first "killer apps" are likely to be games (like Flight Simulator X and Halo 2) that will be Vista-only. This'll be due to force and eschewing of back-porting, rather than inherent advantages of the OS, but they'll still get the job done. I don't know so much about Halo 2 (since it's already out on XBox), but you can bet that there are hundreds of thousands (if not more) of Flight Simulator fans who are planning ahead for Vista just so that they can play the new version. That'll probably be the first app that pulls a large number of people to the OS all on it's own, which is, I think, the broad definition of "killer app." It'll probably take the better part of a year (if not longer) for the "real" killer apps for Vista to emerge.
