Microsoft expects Adobe to file antitrust suit: WSJ | |

Microsoft Corp. said it expected Adobe Systems Inc. to file an antitrust suit in Europe after talks to use Adobe's technology broke down this week, according to the Wall Street Journal. The two companies have been in discussions over the use of Adobe's Portable Document Format, or PDF, within Microsoft's Office suite of applications, the Journal reported, quoting Microsoft General Counsel Brad Smith. Adobe wants Microsoft to remove the feature and offer Adobe's technology separately for a fee. Microsoft has agreed to remove the feature, but is unwilling to charge for it, the Journal reported. | ||

#1,2: Heh. I notice that it's Microsoft making these statements. Nowhere do I see Adobe saying any of this. Looks like typical MS FUD to me. As bluvg said, Adobe's terms let anyone use PDF. And by sheer coincidence, MS is working on its supposed PDF killer, Metro. I can smell an MS proactive strike here. "We've had such trouble with Adobe and PDF that we have no choice but to drop any PDF support in our products and replace it with Metro." Adobe will no doubt refute all of this nonsense by this afternoon. I mean, you can download open source & freeware tools for free that create PDFs. Why would Adobe think it had a leg to stand on with regard to making MS charge for PDF support??? Some people will believe anything.
Speaking of open source, looks like MS needs some OSS goodness to help it secure Windows. But I thought only Communists used open source. Parkkker, can you clarify for us? In other news, MS has yet to patch the last 'own your box' hole in Windows, and there's now a new one this week. Meanwhile, Mozilla just patched Firefox and Thunderbird to 1.5.0.4. |

| #1,2: Actually, there is one scenario where I could see Adobe suing MS about the PDF format. If MS tried their old Embrace & Extend trick on PDF, Adobe would legally hammer them into dust. |
