Microsoft to refine Vista's PC rating tool | |

SEATTLE--Microsoft is retooling a PC rating feature in Windows Vista following criticism from hardware makers and others, an example that the next-generation operating system may not yet be ready for mass consumption. The critique is that the current version of the Windows System Performance Rating feature could be "misleading," Brad Goldberg, general manager for Windows at Microsoft, said in an interview at the Windows Hardware Engineering Conference here. The feature first appeared in a recent Vista preview release and is designed to help consumers when they first buy a PC and to determine which software and hardware works with a system. It looks at the processor, hard disk drive, memory and graphics capabilities and gives each a score, as well as a prominently displayed overall score. | ||

I like how every author that wants to sound smart starts their article with "an example that [Vista] may not be ready for mass consumption."
Personally, I don't really understand the performance rating feature. By the time most people check the rating or even realize that it exists, they're already stuck with the computer. |

| It will have a marketing component to make it easy for users to identify the rating. For instance, the Windows Marketplae will have performance ratings displayed so users have an easy way of knowing if sofware/components should work on a particular system. I expect the ratings will alo be displayed in OEM marketing materials, but am not sure about this. |

| I just assumed this was going to turn into an advertising situation. So, I got a 2.2 on my graphics card, and there would be a little handy link to the windows marketplace to see "systems rated above my rating" or "systems rated 4 or better". |
