IE team responds to NYT article about Google’s hackles’ being raised
Time: 00:01 EST/05:01 GMT | News Source: Scobleizer | Posted By: Kenneth van Surksum

This morning on Memeorandum there are dozens of bloggers reacting to a New York Times article about IE 7.

Dean Hachamovitch, head of the Internet Explorer team responds: "the search box in IE7 is not Microsoft’s. It belongs to the user. Our guiding principle for the search box in IE7 is that the user is in control."

Nicholas Carr makes an even more interesting point: "If Google wants to fully live up to its ideals - to really give primacy to the goal of user choice in search - it should open up its home page to other search engines."

No kidding... Poor google however can they compete? Big bad bully Microsoft abusing their monopoly position by making their own search engine the default.

Give me a break! What a bunch of tree hugging cry babies!

Peace,
Ben

- it doesn't matter that Google is pushing Firefox or Opera (both have minor market shares anyway)
- it doesn't matter that in both browsers Google is the default search engine (again: both browsers are minor players)
- it doesn't matter that you can manually change the default search engine in IE 7 (90% of users are not going to do that anyway)
- what matters is that MS is once again trying to abuse its monopoly in the field of operating systems and webbrowsers to gain control of another market!

Microsoft (and some of its fans on this site) is trying to play stupid while they know VERY WELL what is going on. Stop insulting our intelligence MS!

Goolge = "Cry Baby"

You can easily change the default search engine in IE7 to other engine. Don't forget that Google probably pay Mozilla to make it as the default search engine. MSN is not even and option.

And remember that, Google also trying to use their own search Monopoly to gain control of other market too. There is always two side on every story. Google is not all "do no evil". Wake up!

How do you like taste of your OWN medicine, Google? Just shut up and keep doing what you doing.

#3 It doesn't matter that what you said was true, it doesn't matter that we all know the reason Microsoft is doing this is the same reason they put links to just their store in WMP and is the same reason why IE suddenly had to be a core component of the OS back in the day when Netscape was giving them some grief (although isn't it a coincidence that all of a sudden with IE 7 they managed to gain the knowledge to not make it a core system component anymore!). None of those things matter because everyone here will deny these things either through ignorance or to lie about how effective leveraging an existing monopoly is in propping up a weaker product!

#4 "And remember that, Google also trying to use their own search Monopoly to gain control of other market too."
Google have a Monopoly in search? Really? That's news to us all! Why didn't you say so earlier? You need to start buying up Google stock in that case! Here we were all thinking that Google only handles between 42-46% of searches, Yahoo! handling between 20-30%, MSN handling 13-14% and the rest handled by AOL, Ask etc.

#5 You sound like you yourself need to buy google's stock. Google IS THE seach of internet. 46% is more than Yahoo and MSN combine. They are just afraid of Microsoft.

There is nothing wrong with Microsoft to default MSN as default seach engine in IE7. It makes business sense. On the other hand, Google promotes FireFox on their homepage (which has google as default seach engine) in hoping to use the popularlity of FireFox to further increase their search traffic. It is all business!!

If Google comes up wiht G-OS, G-ubuntu or whatever, they will default the search engine to Google too. I mean why wouldn't they??

#5 IE was never a core system componant. It was tied in with the shell (and it made many improvements too the shell). Different parts of the OS use the rendering engine, but it is not a core part of the OS, and never has been.

I don't know about your WMP, but mine also has view all online stores. Also, WMP in Vista defaults to MusicMatch (?), I believe.

Actually to take it even further if you had google set as your primary search in IE6 (or google toolbar installed) when you load IE7 you automatically get google as the primary search without having to change anything. I think google is becoming a company of whiny little babies. If they really believe what they are saying why not provide links on their main page to all the other major search engines to give the consumer choice.

I find it amusing people stick up for google no matter what they do. In a lot of ways they are like apple in people's view that they can do nothing bad. In this instance I think google needs to stop acting like a bunch of 5 year olds.

Why would this comparison matter when Firefox has a market share of just 10% compared to IE's 85 to 90%? The point is that MS has a "near monopoly" on the browser "market", which it is trying to use to gain control over the search market. Your MSN/IE-Google/Firefox comparison doesn't work because Google doesn't gain anything significant from their alliance with Mozilla while MSN could reap huge benefits from their alliance with IE. It could take away a large part of Google's user base and Google would not be able to do anything about it. Google knows that there are huge amounts of money at stake and are obviously not going to take any risks. Because of IE's dominance an alliance like this is likely to be rulled 'illegal' by both American as wel as European courts anyway.

#9: your last remark is amusing in light of the fact that so many people seem to accept everything MS does without criticism. Me I think that Google's fears are very valid, and it's better for them to react to it now than to be sorry later.

come on - MS is the IT equivalent of the whipping boy. Everything that they do is scorned and cut down. Now I am no MS apologist but I have never heard anything but BS being spouted about MS from just about everyone. Some of it has been deserved. A large amount is not.

Apple is the company that can do no wrong in the eyes of most people. Do you think that MS would get away with having an online music store that only works with its hardware? Google is in many ways the same - the company that can do no "evil". They are a publically traded company - their goal is to increase profits for their share holders. To make this IE7 default search engine spat about anything other then money is laughable. "oh we are looking out for the best interest of the consumer" if the best interest means where all the advertising dollars go then they are right on the money.

If google has the best search then people will use it (which they are because aren't they by far in the lead?)

Dude, Google is not god. I agree with #11. They do what best for share holder which want nothing but profit from their investment. "Do No Evil" is loooonnggg gone the moment Google went public. Google will get worst.

BTW, Google gain almost ALL seach traffic from FireFox. Even when you type "keyword" to the "address bar", it uses Google. Google wants their advertisting money!! And will do whatever it take to keep it that way. again it is all business.

From what I have heard, Google pay Mozilla to get it default seach engine and behind the "Destroy IE" campaign, which give FireFox a very bad name.

reposting some great comments from c|net...

"If Google actually cared about user choice, they'd have asked the Mozilla Foundation to configure Firefox to prompt you to choose your favorite search engine the first time you ran it. And let's not forget about Safari, where Google is the default and it's very hard for normal people to change that. I don't know about you, but this whole 'user choice' argument smells like a double standard to me."
--Jeremy Zawodny

"Google needs to quit its whining over Microsoft's plans to include a search box in the new Internet Explorer 7, with MSN Search set as the default. 'We believe users should choose,' is that right? That philosophy didn't suit you well when you started promoting Firefox on your homepage, did it?"
