1080p HD questions answered | |

Confused about HD formats? Yep, I know I am. After all it turns out that the TVs we were told were 'HD Ready' aren't apparently capable of displaying 1080p signals. Does this then make them HD lite? Well we put the questions about 1080p sets to bods from Toshiba, Sony and Philips. Here's what they had to say. | ||

Fox's HD as broadcast is the ~1-megapixel 720i. The other three broadcast networks claim to use the 2-megapixel 1080i. If more pixels are better in cameras, then why not in TV's? Don't belive the hype over 720i beign good enough. Unless you are made of money there is no reason to pay big bucks for a 720i set when 1080i has twice the clarity, even tbhough 1080i sets costs more at this time. Doesn't really matter.
DVDs look awesome on my television now. I've got no use for a new format. And even if I did, the telelvision I bought from Sony doesn't support the new connectors, so I can't use the new hardware. Too bad for Sony, Toshiba and Philips. |

Fox uses 720p.
720p is much better for sports/action than 1080i. The p stands for progressive meaning all 720 lines are refreshed. The i is interlaced, which means only half are refreshed each interval. Thats ok for static pictures. Bad for action. |

yeah was just going to add the same. I'm reviewing Sky HD mid may (so their press person has said), so hopefully that will give me at least a week before everyone starts to get it installed here in the UK, so I can give my views on it.
Remember this is pretty big news for those of us in the UK as this is the first HD service launched here. |
