The new software is likely to appear this week, with improvements to bookmarks, tabs, and extensions. The Mozilla Foundation is close to releasing the first alpha edition of the next Firefox, the group's Web site announced, with a Tuesday unveiling likely. Firefox 2.0, which at one point Mozilla officials said would debut in Alpha 1 format by the end of February, may appear as early as Tuesday. The browser, which will stress bookmark, tab, and extension changes, is in early development, and is scheduled for a final rollout in the third quarter. According to entries on the Mozilla Developer Center blog and minutes of a status meeting a week ago, Firefox 2.0 Alpha 1 -- also called "BonEcho" -- may release Tuesday. Or Friday. | ||

A public Alpha build??? Wow, that's possibly asking for real trouble.
I'd never test an alpha on other than a dedicated, imaged, I can restore it really easily box that's used for just that kind of testing. Put an alpha on a production box...never. I'm squeamish about putting a beta, even a beta 2 or RC, on a machine that isn't a testing box. But how many people will download it because its a "new version", not really knowing what and alpha build is. |

Not any more than MS counting every sale of Visual Studio as a VC developer and a VB developer and a VFP developer and a VID developer... #5: Or less than the 35mb's i have had it running at today! 33,544K on my machine right now. I think NotParker has a bum machine. My question: Will MS "innovate" by adding features from Firefox into IE? |

As always, you're going to see things happen both ways. IE gets tabs, Firefox gets the close button on the tabs (not that this is an IE-specific feature, though), as well as a better way (or rather, a way, as opposed to nothing) to handle tab overflow. They are both adding "session saver" capabilities (built-in, rather than as a finicky--although hard to do without, IMO--extension), though it looks like IE 7 has it now; I'm not sure if it is working in the FF 2.0 alpha or not. If IE 7 gets the implementation of Quick Tabs right, that's moving things along in the browser space in a significant way, I think--it's pretty slick. The only thing I would miss personally at this point about Firefox is the ad-blocker and the Ctrl + F search function. By all accounts, the security for IE in Vista is going to be top-notch (finally), also. Hopefully it will go down with things like IIS as something they fixed and got right. |

| #8 Ad blocking in IE7 is far above that of IE6 and, IMHO, Firefox. No popups, even here!!! ;) And it even blocks out the huge majority of those flashing animated ads I hate so much. |
