Microsoft axes Vista Bios replacement | |

Microsoft has decided not to support the Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI) in its forthcoming Windows Vista operating system. EFI replaces the Basic Input/Output System (Bios) that has been used for the past 20 years. Both technologies give a computer its first instructions when turned on, and allow the operating system to be loaded. EFI, however, has an advantage over Bios in that it allows for shorter boot times and lets hardware vendors to create device drivers which are independent of operating systems. Microsoft had initially said that it would support the technology for 64-bit systems, but decided to make the changes because there will be too few 64-bit processors in the market when Windows Vista ships later this year. | ||

This article is inaccurate. MS is not dropping support for EFI totally as this article implies. They will support it, for 64-bit systems only, in a release of Windows after Vista RTM. Whether that release is a Vista update such as a service pack, or is a future release of Windows has yet to be determined.

That's an easy list:
Microsoft Command Shell, currently in Beta and publicly available now for Vista, XP, and their respective Server OSes, but not shipping in the box. In addition to availability via standalone download and the Windows SDK, it will ship with Exchange and MOM, and possibly other products. WinFS, also currently in Beta, available via MSDN, and shipping as an update to Vista, but not in the RTM version. Every software project has features cut from it, otherwise it'll never ship. Vista is late enough the way it is... Much better that they axe these features and ship it in 06, rather than ship in 07 with the features only half-baked.
There's lots of "small" features that have been cut as well. For example, Longhorn 4051's IE 6.05 included a Download Manager, which has since disappeared. |
