Microsoft today unveiled details for Ultra-Mobile Personal Computers (UMPCs), a new category of mobile computing devices that features small, lightweight, carry-everywhere hardware designs coupled with the full functionality of a Microsoft Windows-based PC and a choice of input options, including enhanced touch-screen capabilities. The debut of UMPCs here at CeBIT, the worldfs largest trade fair showcasing digital IT and telecommunications solutions, follows Microsoft Chairman and Chief Software Architect Bill Gatesf call in 2005 for the computer industry to develop a new category of PCs that are less expensive, lighter and more functional. PressPass asked Bill Mitchell, corporate vice president of Microsoft's Windows Mobile Platforms Division, to discuss UMPCs and explain how these new devices are different from other mobile computers. | ||

Windows Defender Live (Beta), help needed from Microsoft.
Except for the new download Signature Version 1.14.1314.1, all previous versions have fallen into a loop to High Priority Definition Update 1.14.1314.1 for Beta Windows Defender (KB915597). The users of the Windows OneCare Live (Beta) have downloaded automatically the file in excess of 54 times, as per the Update History, with no positive results. Previous results of the Windows Defender (Beta) Definition Updates that worked are: 1.13.1276.3, 1.13.1272.4, 1.13.1276.16, 1.13.1282.6 and 1.13.1386.1 with KB 892519, 892519, 892519, 915597 and 915597 respectively. The loop failure started when trying to update to 1.13.1288.5 and 1.13.1314.1 both with KB915597, from older Signature Versions. Worst of all, no removal of the Defender beta is possible nor installation of the newer 1314 version ontop of the other. Microsoft, please read also the many complains in the Discussion Groups Home on Security Anti-Spyware Subject. |

Efrain: This is not the best place to post a message, even if you post it in all the article comment areas - which you did for some wacky reason - that asks MS for help with a beta. In any case, the message you will receive from MS is that betas are not supported. If you didn't back up your installation partition (Acronis True Image is excellent for recovering from nasty beta events) you are out of luck. Efrain, if you are a OneCare user, why not post this as a bug for that platform, then it will get handed off to the right people.
http://beta.windowsonecare.com/Feedback.aspx rcarring, USB and keyboard support are covered -- see the Channel 9 interview. The Mac Mini is not in the same market, nor seeks to solve the same problems as this device, nor is it portable. |
