Microsoft is targeting its new category of 'Lifestyle PCs' to appeal to both enterprise and consumer customers. The first prototypes are due to debut at Cebit on March 9. Microsoft is preparing to unfold what it hopes will become a new type of computer: The Lifestyle PC. The software giant intends to bring to market a new class of smaller and more versatile, battery-powered computers that offer users greater utility—they could connect to networks and download e-mail or make Voice Over IP (VOIP) phone calls, as well as manage photos, music and videos —but still use a full versions of Windows. | ||

| I'll wait to see what it is... but something tells me that this will flop. The form factor discussed is not right for the niche they're targeting. Only gadgeteers want to carry around something with a 7-8" screen to listen to MP3s.... |

| The most important factor that will push people to purchase the newer device is price. Above $500 and purchasers will be mainly people that want the latest toys to show their friends and some that see value in it. In the $400 range sales will be to a wide mix of people. At or below $300 and this thing will be a monster seller that puts MS portable hardware on the map. I'm betting that MS will set the price too high and thereby cede the portable market to Apple, due to MS's inflated view of the value of their own products. I hope I'm wrong on the selling price, as a computing paradigm shift would help the economy for years. |
