While Microsoft faces a host of challenges in maintaining its market share numbers and persuading customers to upgrade to its 2007 Office System suite of products when released in the second half of this year, its competitors face an equally daunting task of winning users away from Office 2007 and growing their numbers. Heading the list of challenges facing Microsoft is the fact that Office 2007 has a new user interface, which could require extensive staff retraining at a significant cost, as well as a new file format, which has the potential to create compatibility issues, analysts such as Joe Wilcox of Jupiter Research, told eWEEK. | ||

| No doubt MS will "forget" to include this factor into any future ROI studies, just like they always "forget" to include the cost of cleaning up viruses and malware. |

For the same reason that the TCO of a car doesn't include fixing it when you run it into a tree. Yes, MS is responsible for trying to make a secure OS and software, but it's the users' responsibility to operate their computer in a safe and secure manner too.
Cars used to come with no seatbelts, now they are standard along with airbags, but you still can't drive 55MPH straight into a cement wall and expect to be in good shape. Is that Ford's fault? TowerDave |

The new "user interface" is very intuitive; my bet is that the people who will be more affected will be the power users who were used to do everything using keyboard shortcuts. Average users relying on drop menus will be able to use functions they did not even know existed before.
As for the new file format users will have the same options to save in older formats as they always had. This post was edited by Fritzly on Thursday, March 02, 2006 at 14:32. |

Office 12 is a non-starter unless MS can realistically demonstrate how it will increase revenue or decrease expenses.
Any justification will have to overcome the costs of the ... upgrade software training migration downtime helpdesk calls lost efficiency until users get used to the new interface I don't see where its worth it, especially if you've aleady got OfficeXP or 2003. Wrong for those with Software Assurance or Enterprise Agreements who get the software automatically. Wrong for those buying new PC'swchich will automatically have Office 2007 on them if Office is purchased. Wrong for home users who get to put it on 3 PC's at home. etc etc |
