Sun Microsystems Inc. voiced its concerns about joining a newly formed, widely backed Web services interoperability organization, at a lively session at Harvard Business School here today. BM and Microsoft, of Redmond, Wash., spearheaded an effort last Wednesday to form a group called the Web Services Interoperability (WS-I) organization to promote standards for Web services interoperability. WS-I will produce tests and give guidance on Web services interoperability. Sun, of Palo Alto, Calif., has been a leader in the Web services space with its Sun ONE [Open Network Environment] architecture. | ||

Whaaa? As far as I can tell, Sun ONE consists of nothing more than preliminary documentation and a "strategy." Can anybody provide me with links that consist of something more? How exactly are they leading anything? |

Umm, basically it sounds like Sun is just upset that they weren't at the top of the invite list. But considering they've been opposed to web services since day one, I can't understand why they think they are a leader.

| J2EE is a standard in as much as ASP's are a standard. Personally I am not impressed with J2EE at all. Plain jane ASP 3.0 whooped it on some speed test we ran. With ASP.Net it won't even be close . . . |

I love J2EE's use of Java Beans (objects that represent a dynamic page), and that's one reason why I love ASP.NET, which does the same only better. :-)
In general, however, J2EE doesn't scale as well as a properly designed ASP/COM solution. |

#8 - Thanks, that link was interesting.
It still appears, however, that Sun ONE is 99.9% marketing. I didn't see any products specifically devoted to XML Web Services development, just a bunch of pre-existing products that could be used to create web services "the hard way." To say Sun is a leader in the Web Services arena would be like saying that PERL is a leader in the dynamic web site arena. Sure, you can get the job done with PERL, but it's a helluva lot harder and more time consuming than PHP, ASP, or JSP. The eWeek article suggested that Sun was leading the Web Services effort with a real package of tools that allowed developers to create and consume web services; something like Visual Studio.NET or the various kits included with Web Sphere from IBM. As it appears now, Sun says they support web services, but forces developers to use existing tools, which end up making the creation of web services far more painful than it should be. I've developed Java clients that consume .NET Web Services, and it's a fairly tedious process. Not impossible, mind you, but definitely not indicative of a product from " leader in the Web services." |
