Microsoft moving into embedded chips | |

Software giant Microsoft Corp.(NasdaqNM:MSFT - news) will announce plans to allow several semiconductor makers to modify its software to make customized embedded chips, the Wall Street Journal reported in Tuesday's online edition. Chip makers including Intel Corp, MIPS Technologies Inc and ARM Holdings Plc will be able to make the chips for devices running versions of Microsoft's Windows CE software, the paper said. The embedded chips can be used in products ranging from factory robots to ``smart'' refrigerators, which could keep track of, for instance, when a person runs out of eggs, the paper said. Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer is expected to unveil the plan on Tuesday at a conference in Las Vegas, the paper said. | ||

| This is so cool. WindowsCE is by far the best mini-OS. Compared to PalmOS and embedded Linux, it blows them all away. It'd be awesome to have appliances with WindowsCE that are fully multimedia that have a rich environment including full color, full motion video, a consistent interface and a large group of developers writing great applications. |

| I really think that we'll see many more embedded chips in everyday appliances that we previously wouldn't have thought. This is just the beginning! |
