Microsoft Stops New Work to Fix Bugs | |

Microsoft Corp. today announced a month-long moratorium on new coding as part of its Trustworthy Computing Initiative, said Richard Purcell, director of the company’s corporate computing office. “We are not coding new code as of today for the next month,” Purcell said at a privacy and data security summit in Washington that was sponsored by the Corporation of Privacy Officers. Instead, the company is going to go over its old code as a first step in cleaning out bugs. Purcell likened it to a 20-year spring cleaning. “It’s time to get the garage cleaned out,” he said. Describing the state of computing today as unstable and unreliable, he said Microsoft chairman Bill Gates “is really annoyed by the incredible pain we put everyone through in computing.” | ||

#1: I'm not sure if you're being sarcastic or not, but if you are:
A whole month for hundreds of developers (possibly thousands, MS has over 20,000 employees, many of which are developers, I'm sure) means hundreds or thousands of man-months. You can get a lot accomplished in a company that size in one month. That's several man-years of work. And with bugs, its easy to distribute, so the law of diminishing returns doesn't necessarily apply here. |

From what I am hearing about Enron, it's becoming more and more apparent that the company did not create wealth. Rather they borrowed money, hid the loan off their balance sheet with a partner entity and reported the borrowed cash as profits.
As far as Microsoft's $30B in the bank. Bill Gates is a bit eccentric. He is of the belief that a company should always have enough sitting in the bank such that they can operate for an entire year without generating any revenue. Maybe that's a bit excessive, but what it does mean is that Microsoft values their employees and you are very unlikely to see layoffs there. |

I like the idea of the million dollar challenge.
#23 - 1) Open source does not make a product secure. This is a myth of the Linux world. What makes a product secure is audits and code review. This can be done internally, or by hiring an external entity and making them sign an NDA. The Linux world does not rely on formal audits and reviews, they figure since the source is out there millions of people are already reading it, which is the reason it's a myth. 2) Patching is an issue. WinXP solves this to a large degree, but Microsoft is still getting shit for not making this auto-update notification available for previous versions. No win situation there. I'm pretty sure SCM comes with Win2k and WinXP by default install. 3) Microsoft has some of the best automated regression tests in the business. They are frequently referred to for best practices in the testing industry. 4) True. This will become less of an issue as WinXP becomes more standard. Win2k introduced a lot of registry permissions that even NT4 developers weren't ready to face. 5) Actually you need IE for just about everything. It is a core component and is used for for HTML rendering of help files, administration screens, etc. Netmeeting, windows media, etc. are all removable. The new release of .Net server does not install the IIS components by default. Telnet server has never been setup to run by default. |

If there is one thing that's very prevalent in Microsoft's history, it's sudden and abrupt changes in strategy command directly from the top.
History suggests this is both common and possible. What suggests the opposite? |
