Microsoft Announces Windows XP and Office XP | |

Microsoft Corp. announced product names today for the upcoming new Microsoft® Windows® desktop operating system and Microsoft Office desktop applications suite. Windows (formerly code-named "Whistler") will become Windows XP, and Office (formerly code-named "Office 10") will become Office XP. The XP name is short for "experience," symbolizing the rich and extended user experiences Windows and Office can offer by embracing Web services that span a broad range of devices. These breakthrough versions of Windows and Office will give people the most powerful end-to-end computing experiences ever available," said Bill Gates, chairman and chief software architect of Microsoft. "The coming generation of Windows XP and Office XP will enable customers to communicate and collaborate more effectively, be more creative and productive, and have more fun with technology." | ||

| I don't like it either. I would have preffered Office 10/Whistler or even Windows 2001 or 2002 or something. |

| That's a good point....I think it will scare a bunch of people a way if they are real careful how they advertise it. |

| I've asked a few people who don't know a great deal about Windows/PC's what they would make of the name and, as expected they all think it sounds like it is made for more experienced users or businesses |

| How many people do you think even know Windows 2000 exists? Or care for that matter. Because this new system is built on the Windows 2000 kernel, it will bring the best Win 2000 features in terms of reliability and dependability to consumers while yet further improving Windows 2000 for business Win XP users. That's why they will have four (and eventually five) versions. Personal, Professional, Server and Advanced Server and eventually DataCenter server. I'm unsure if Server will be released with the first two or later, but I'm fairly sure Advanced Server won't be out till early next year and definitely sure XP datacenter server won't be out till then. So depending on what servers you have, it may not be worth waiting. I would wait until the official announcement on feb 13. One of the key advancements in Windows XP will be Advanced Server, DataCenter Server and possiblily Server will have features for ia64 rather than x86 which they all have now. |
